Victor H. - Occasional scpa

couples.
Ellen H. - My husband and
I have been married three
years and have a year-old
baby. Our problem has to do
with our vacation..
Vic loves to go camping and
always went before he was
married. After we were mar
ried we went to visit my folks
who have a nice little cottage
in a seashore community. Vic
hated it there.
This year he wants to go
camuing with a group o( mar
ried and single men. That
means he'll leave me and the
baby with my folks for two
whole weeks. I don't feel like
going there without him. I
can't even have any fun go
ing out in the evening. It's
not fair!
Victor H.-I have talked to
some of the married men go
ing on this camping trip and
they say thw is the greatest
kind of vacation. Husband and
wife need a separation occa
sionally. When they get back
from these trips, these men
say everything is lovey-dovey
for months. Their wives ap
preciate them and they appre
ciate their wives.
Anyway, this is the kind of
vacation I like. I like to get
away from women and chil
dren and houses and Just feel
the great outdoors around me.
You can't have that feeling at
the beach - in the midst ol
your in-laws.
Ellen really enjoys me
beach and being with her
folks.
Th Council: The camping
vacation sounds great!
But one issue Victor fails
to recognize is that women,
themselves, sometimes like to
get away from women and
children and houses, unacr
ordinary conditions, the only
alleviating element tor mosi
woman l ih rnmnanionshiD
of their husbands, incy gei a
sense of participation In the
wnr H nutsirie their nomes on
ly through their husbands.
Ellen undoubtedly feels she
is being "dumped" on her par-
ni Hnr routine will have
little change. The scenery out
side her door will be differ
oni hut that's about all. We
doubt that will give her the
lilt she needs on a vacation.
Wo fnl rathor sorrv for
couples who need separation
to enable them to "appreci
ate" one another. It is true
lhat ahepnre from lOVCd OnCS
usually makes us more keen
ly aware of how mucn we
need them, but such absences
in nainftil thines in a happy
married life. It s like putting
on a pair of shoes that are
too tight simply because it
feels so good when we lane
them off.
Married life shouldn t be
ill rnntinp and responsibility.
It should include a good meas-
re of shared fun and recrea-
nn Thu marriaffp relation-
Ship is enriched by these ex
periences and there Is a desire
for more of them.
Victor might find much
nlnaciirp in introducing Ellen
in I hp "ffrpat outdoors" and

state parks. It would probab
ly be a great noveuy tor r.i-
Ipn tn snend one vacation
awav from the beach and her
parents, and it could be the
beginning of many enjoyable
family holidays.
Mnnv men like to be With
"the boys" at times, Just as
women enjoy an occasional
cvKiirvinn with "thn ffirls."
There is a sense of recaptured
youth in sucn nouaays, dui
the average mature person
will find an evening or after
noon of this kind of pleasure
sufficient. It hardly seems an
appropriate setup for an an
nual vacation.

UPI Whit House Reporter
Washington- tUPI) -Backstairs
at the While House:
Members of the White
House staff arc hoping against
hope that Mamie Eisenhower
never sees her picture as it
appenred in Honolulu the
Sunday the President ended
his Hawaiian holiday and
headed for the United States.
Mamie's picture was on the
cover of a Sunday magazine
and showed her with brilliant
red hair.
Actually her hair is a gold
en shade of brown.
Dim View Taken
The Secret Service took a
rather dim view of reports
after the President left For
mosa that the Nationalist
Chinese police had nipped a
plot by mainland Chinese
Communists to slip Into Till
pci and bomb the President,
Actually, the Far East was
full of similnr reports.
When the Chief Executive
was in Manila, a sr.iall squad
of Huk killers, the insurrec
tionists ' who theoretically
hide out in the Philippine
mountains, was said to have
come to town bent on killing
Eisenhower. If the links
showed up, they kept rather
quiet about it.
The Philippine police re
garded with some gravity,
however, the young man they
seized at the university short
ly before Eisenhower spoke
there. The man was selling
"We Like Ike" signs but
packing a gun and a gren
ade. Pennies Presented
When the President was in
Hawaii, school children of the
50th slate presented him with
141,000 pennies donated by
the kids as their contribution
for the ambitious East-West
Center of Cultural Relations
at the University of Hawaii.
And the President quietly re
turned the favor, matching
the donation of the children
with his personal contribu
tion to the center. But not
in pennies.

Eisenhower's departure re

on the miiliilund, but they in

He was referring to the
