HOW MANY LEGS-The answer is there
are four girls in the picture. They are the
four who won team honors at Houston,
lex., in the Gulf AAU synchronized swim
ming competition. The face and the out
stretched arms belong to Vickie Hinze.
You will have to take our word for it that
the "hula hands" and legs in the fore
ground belong to Mary Garcia, Pat Bauch
and Pamela Palm. (UPI Telephoto)
The Family Council
Editor Note: The Kamlly Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist,
three clergymen, a newspaper editor a women's editor and two writers.
Kach article is a summary of an actual ase history The Council reports
on problems that have been deal wt b by responsible acencles and
counselors.
Martin J. - It would be dis
loyal of us to share the house
with Roger.
Ethel J. - His wife says she
doesn't consider it disloyal.
Martin J. - My wife and I
are in our mid-20s and have
a year -old daughter. This
season we took a summer cot
tage with a young couple who
have been our friends for sev
eral years.
When we got out there, we
were surprised to find Roger
Jiving there by himself. He
said he and his wife have
separated and are planning to
get a divorce. He is planning
to live at the cottage while
his wife will remain in the
city apartment.
Ethel was supposed to be
at the cottage during the week
and I would come out week
ends. I don't feel it's right
for her to keep house for
Roger - which is what she
would be doing. Besides, it's
not loyal to Roger's wife, who
was our friend before she
married Roger.
Ethel J. - I was worried
about the matter of loyalty at
first, but I discussed it with
Marian, Roger's wife. She
told me she really didn't care
what we did about the cot
tage, but she definitely would
not consider it disloyal of us
to keep up a friendship with
Hoger.
As for the housework, all I
know is I'm not going to do
any of it for Roger. He'll have
to take care of his own room
and do his share of shopping,
etc. If I'm cooking it means
nothing for me to cook for
another person.
I feel that Martin is creat
ing issues where none really
exist. It's too late to change
our plans and we'll be stuck
in the hot city all summer if
we don't take this place. We
can't afford a place of our
own.
e
The Council: We wonder
how this husband has become
such a timid soul that he is
afraid to call a spade a spade
and tell his wife she has no
business spending the summer
in a house alone with another
man.
We see nothing but foggy
obscurantism in all the other
arguments. It is nonsense to
talk about loyalty and house
work when a much more im
portant issue is involved.
Roger is all wrong to put
his friends on the spot in this
way. Any friend worth his
salt would simply have re
tired from the scene when the
situation became apparent.
And, we fear, any wife
worth her salt would not
want to accept a setup of this
kind.
Ethel may proclaim her
loyalty to her husband and
her disinterest in Roger, but
we think she is either insin-
ere or lacking in Judgment
and maturity if she doesn't
see this as a potentially dan
gerous arrangement. At the
very least it would be an un
comfortable situation for most
women. And most women
would be too considerate of
their husbands' feelings to
impose a strain of this sort
on them.
Martin, old chap, you are
more mouse than man if you
cannot put your foot down on
this setup - and for the real
reason.

Youngest Confederate
Veteran's Son To Be 50
Richmond, Va. William E.
Smith of Richmond will be
half a century old in July.
And next year marks the
100th anniversary of the Civil
War.
What ties these two random
facts together, reports the
Sons of Confederate Veterans,
is that Smith is the nation's
youngest son of a Confederate
veteran.
Smith, who is Virginia sales
manager for Melrose Distil
lers Company, says his father,
Carlton E. Smith, enlisted in
the Confederate cause in 1863
at the age of 16 and served un
til the end of the war in Nel
son's Brigade. William was
born July 22, 1910.

Toll Booth Blocks
Prisoner's Escape
Fort Worth, Tex. The lack
of a thin dime blocked a state
training school escapee's path
to freedom.
A 16-year-old inmate fled
the Gatcsville School and
stole a car. He drove to the
Dallas-Fort Worth area and
motored onto the turnpike be
tween the two cities.
When he started to leave
the thoroughfare, he didn't
have the 10 cents for the toll
and attendants called the
highway patrol.
