since Ichie Honda returned to
Japan from a three-year stint
as a worker on a California
farm he has been torn be
tween the new ideas lie learn
ed in the United States and
the traditions of his village.
The :)u-year-old Honda is
referred to as one of the "new
farmers" in his native Niiharu
village. The California sun
shine and plentitude of whole
some food he enjoyed in
Orange county, Calif., have
made him look in village eyes
like a "new" man.
But the changes in Honda
go much deeper than that.

Japanese Farmer Wants To Install California Ideas

that it would take a farmer
here more than 20 years to
have this much money. But

"But now I'm afraid of
money. The idea of wealth
frightens me."
Honda, speaking with the
drawl of the heavy Japanese
rural dialect, said he was now
working on a village levee
construction piojcct as a day
laborer.
Wearing a khaki shirt and
blue dungarees, he sat on the
lacquered veranda of his
thatch-roofed house in Gum
ma Prefecture. The twittering
of chickadees and the mur
muring of streams could be
distinctly heard in the clear
mountain air.
"Now I get only 350 yen
(97 cents) for working eight
hours a day," Honda said. "I
was making much more than
this per hour in the states."
Honda rubbed his blistered
hands.
All Work on Farm
He, with his elderly rar
ents, three brothers and thret
sisters, all work the farm's
four acres containing a rice
paddy, a mulberry field and
land for vegetables, oats,
wheat and other crops.
The Hondas also own 10
acres of forest land and a few
domestic animals - a work
cow. a milking goat, two pigs,
a dozen rabbits and 20 chick
ens. The family consumes
three-quarters of all they pro
duce and sell the remainder
to the city markets through
the village co-operative asso
ciation. Last year the fam
ily income totalled 350,000
yen ($872).
"Our low economic status
can be greatly improved by
introducing national thinking
in our village life," Honda
said.
He said he planned to buy
a garden tractor (cost: $500).
"But before I get the ma
chine I must step up the vol
ume of work in two or three
crops to lower expenses," he
said. "We are now growing
more than 20 different kinds
of crops on this small piece
of- land."

He said he will spend the

for more farm land.
"Naturally I want to get a
television set, a refrigerator,
a washing machine for my
family and a motorcycle for
myself," he said. "But I will
have to wait until I profit
from my 'modernized' farm
