Comet Finlay
Rediscovered
In Aquarius
Washington, (Sck -rv
Ice)-The comet Fii... , ex
pected to brighten enough
this summer to be observed
with moderate size telescopes,
has just been rediscovered for
the first time since its disap
pearance in 1954.
This comet was rediscov
ered by Robert Burnham, the
discoverer of several comets
that bear his name. The Fin
ley comet appears only every
seven years.
1 It was originally discov
ered in 1886. Since then it
has been observed in 1893,
J906, 1919, 1926, and 19515
54. It was not seen in 1933,
, 1940 and 1947.
The comet is now in the
constellation of Aquarius in
the morning sky. However,
it is of 17th magnitude and
only a photographic object.
It is expected to brighten
to 10th magnitude by Aug
ust. By that time it will be
1 in the consteilation Taurus
and should be bright enough
to be seen with a mnrierate
sized, amateur telescope.
17th Magnitude
Discoveries of a new comet
and a supernova have also
been reported by Humarson.
.The comet is o 17th magni
tude. It is not known if it
will brighten. It is located in
the constellation of Herculus.
The supernova was of 14th
'magnitude when discovered.
"A nova is a star that sudden
ly increases in brightness and
then dims down again. A su
pernova is about 100 times
s bright as a nova.
. News of the comet Finley,
discovered at 1:02 a.m. (PST)
June 21, and the comet and
supernova, discovered respec
tively on June 18 and 17, was
reported to Harvard College
'Observatory, clearing house
for astronomical information
in the Western Hemisphere.
Scientists Fight
fire With Fire
In Cancer Battle
New York, (Science Serv-lce)-The
latest strategy in the
"war against cancer is to play
ahe deadly game according to
the enemy's rules-and beat
liim at it.
t A report released here by
jthe Sloan-Ketterling Institute
ior Cancer Research reveals
.that deoxyribonucleic acid
tDNA), the heredity-carrying
chemical of some viruses, has
teen isolated from a cancer
inducing virus and has led to
cancers in laboratory animals.
Iany scientists believe the
:DNA of the virus, not content
.to control only its own here
jdity factors, either alters or
supplements the DNA in body
cells.
May Trigger Change
This change in cellular
DNA may trigger the change
from normal to cancer. In
fact, leukemic blood cells
are distinguished from nor
mal white blood cells by char
acteristic differences in the
PNA.
Putting together the new
est pieces of information gath
ered by its own and other
research groups, Sloan-Ket-tering's
report indicates that
if the cancer DNA can influ
ence normal DNA it may be
possible to turn the tables and
chemically influence or de
stroy the cancer DNA.
; Some of the chemical
agents used against cancer ap
pear to do just that-interfere
tvith the cancer cell's manu
facture of nucleic acid. Dif
ferent chemicals may inhibit
nucleic acid synthesis at dif
ferent points in its manufac
ture. Mechanism Pinpointed
The Institute also reports
hat the mechanism by which
iancer cells become resistant
to chemical treatment by de
veloping new routes of nu-1
Cleic acid synthesis has now
been pinpointed in several in
stances. But this re-routing
problem remains one of the
major stumbling blocks in
treating the disease with med
ical agents.
' In a slightly different ap
proach, advances in organic
chemistry have made it pos
sible to synthesize normal and
abnormal components of
DNA. It is hoped that the ab
normal components will be
taken up by cancer cells and
will lead to their destruction.
