Boating Safety
Is Essential
The millions of Ameri
cans who enjoy boating
h o u 1 d always follow
tiicse few .simple rules for
boating safety:
Carry n approved life
preserver or cushion for
each person aboard. This
is required by law in most
slates and on federal wa
ters. Children and non
swimmers should wear a
life vest at all times.
When using the cushion
type life preserver, wear
it across the chest iut
across the back.
Don't overload the
boat. Know its capacity
in pounds or persons -the
number people it can
seat Is not a safe guide.
Balance the boat load.
Distribute evenly from
side to side and from bow
to stern.
Keep all passengers
seated on the seats, not
on the gunwales or deck.
Never stand up in a small
boat unless you are sure
it is big and stable
enough to support you. If
necessary to change po
sitions keep low and hold
on to both, gunwales.
Don't overpower the
boat. Too big a motor
may cause damage.
Check Weather
Watch the weather. Get
ashore before a storm
breaks.
If caught in a storm,
keep passengers low by
having them sit in the
bottom of the boat, (lead
into the waves at low
speed.
If the boat capsizes,
stay with it and wait for
help. Don't try to swim
ashore!
Keep your speed down
in harbors or anchorages
or when passing close to
swimmers, fishennen or
olher boats.
Head into waves or the
wake of another bout at
an angle. Don't ride par
allel to them or take them
over the stern.
Never leave the dock
without basic safety
equipment paddle,
anchor and line, fire ex
tinguisher, horn or whit
tle, bailing device and
the required running
lights, if there is any
chance you may be out
after dark.
Know the marine
"rules of the road" and
follow them in passing or
overtaking another boat.
Keep a sharp lookout
at ail times for obstruc
tions or other boats.
Watch your wake it
may swamp another craft
or damage shore installa
tion. Remember that courte
sy and common sense are
the basic rules for safety
afloat.
WASH AND WEAR
Easy-wash, little-or-no-iron
fabrics are a real
iKKin to travelers, espe
cially those overseas. Be
wise and see that when
ever possible the clothes
you take along have this
feature. Other good trav
elers in fabric are wools,
knits, silks, jerseyes, and
prints in most any fabric
as these camouflage spots
and wrinkles.
Cullegc campuses will
be cape-happy this au
tumn. One tent-like cape
o fclaret red wool flan
nel buttons up to the
neck and has its own
matching slim skirt.
Heading the new silhou
ette popularity parade
right along side capes are
ponchos - bright plaids
and solid shades in cotton
poplins, synthetics and
wools.
SHIRT POCKET TRAT-ELER-The
word for this
miniature all transistor
radio. Weighing a mere
nine ounces, including the
battery, the radio is en
closed in a non-breakable
case that makes it a per
fest go-everywhere trav
eling companion.
Olive and ivy tones of
green will be afoot with
the males come fall. The
National Shoe Institute
reported that every ma
jor shoe company is pre
paring new footwear in
every shade of olive from
pale grayed tones to al
most black. They come in
brushed and suedes, in
waxed finishes.
Do not be misled by the
fact that you can leave
the United States with
out a smallpox vaccina
tion. In order to get back
in you must have had one
within the past three
years and be able to
prove it. Be suhe your
doctor signs a certificate
to this effect on the ap
proved World Health Or
ganization card. Keep the
card with you.
Improvements are con
tinually being made in
the nautical charts Pub
lished by the Coast and
Geodetic Survey, U. S.
Department of Commerce
to meet the demands of
the ever-growing fleet of
small craft operating in
the coastal waters of the
United States.
Don't Carry Much
Cash on Travels
The practical way to
carry your funds, no mat
ter where you are going
to travel, is in travelers'
checks. The $10 or $20
denominations are best.
In many outside-of-the-U.
S. spots, travelers'
check payments are sura
to meaa a discount on
your purchaae.
It' advisable to keep
about $23 in cash with
you at all times, and even
better if it is in $1 bills.
Don't bother with ex
changing your currency
here; all foreign banks
offer this service.
LIST VALUABLES
Before leaving the U.S.
have any valuable jewel
ry, binoculars, furs or
foreign cameras certified
by Customs. Thus there
will be no trouble about
possible duty charges
when you return.
HANGERS
The easy -to-oarry -along
plastic hangers will come
in mighty handy for dry
ing clothes, and in Europ
for hanging up clothes,
as many hotels furnish
very few hangers.
If you're going abroad
this summer and any part
of your trip will be de
voted to business (such as
convention, fair, research
aa an author or teacher,
etc.) it will pay you to
cheek on the federal In
come tax laws.
