cause he has read that his
disease is he
reditary, and
yet none of his
known ances
tors have suf
fered from it.
The answer, I
think, is easy.
His father or
a grandfather
probably has
Dr. Alvri an abnormal
amount of uric acid in his
blood, which, for some un
known reason, has not Dro-
duced attacks of arthritis. The
world is full of what are
called carriers of disease -people
who can transmit a
disease in spite of the fact
that they have no recogniz
able signs of it. Sometimes a
careful study by an expert
will show they have a few
manifestations of it. This ex
plains why so many people
with the form of familial epi
lepsy that shows up in child
hood say that there is no
epilepsy In their family.
There is another feature of
heredity that usually only stu
dents of the subject know
about, and this is what is
called penetrance. A low de
gree of penetrance means that
when perhaps six children in
herit a disease, only two will
show it. Many of the reported
studies of the inheritance of
a disease, such as epilepsy,
are of almost no value be
cause the investigator appar
ently made no effort to look
for the many relatives who
might have been carriers, or
who might have had minor
forms of the disease. Also,
some Investigators appear to
have asked about disease only
in parents and grandparents,
and failed to notice all the
illness in uncles and aunts,
nephews, cousins and broth
ers and sisters.

should get in touch with a
place like the John Tracy
Clinic, in Los Angeles, Calif.

course for parents of deaf
children.
Relationship of
Rage and Blood

Dr. Charles W. Wahl, psy
chiatrist at the University of
California Medical school,
Los Angeles, thinks such a
relationship may be m 0 r e j
truth than folklore and could
offer a clue to more effective
treatment of high blood pres
sure in some cases.
The cause of a certain type
of high blood pressure known
as essential hypertension is
unknown. However, psycho
therapeutic studies have dem
onstrated evidence of massive
repression of unacceptable
feelings in these patients, Dr.
Wahl said.
These feelings include hos
tility or repressed rage, gen
erally equated with a "mur
derous loss of self control."
They also Include an inordi
nate fear of death.
Organic Changes
Just how repressed rage
and resultant prolonged ten
sion may contribute to this
type of high blood pressure is
also unknown, he said. Per
haps certain constricting ef
fects of emotional stress on
blood vessels over long pe
riods of time may contribute
to organic changes in the ves
sels.
Dr. Wahl's experiences with
such patients have led him
to believe that intensive in
sight psychotherapy begun In
a well-motivated patient be
fore such Irreversible organic
changes have occurred goes a
long way toward alleviating
or vastly modifying the disease.
Some Patients
Get Jitters From
Tranquilizers
New York (Science Serv
ice) - If a patient becomes
more jittery and anxious aft
er taking tranquilizers, the
drug may have worked too
well and on the wrong sys
tem. In a study of 4,000 patients
taking tranquilizers, Dr.
Frank J. Ayd Jr., chief of
psychiatry at Franklin Square
hospital in Baltimore, Md.,
found 500 patients with post
treatment symptoms ranging
from muscular weakness and
anxiety to labored breathing
and grotesque body contor
tions. In some cases symp
toms were wrongly diagnosed
as seizures, tetanus, menin
gitis, encephalitis and polio,
and resulted in emergency
hospitalization, spinal punc
tures, antibiotic therapy and
even tracheotomies.
Distort Activities
Most of the blame fell to
the phenothiazine group of
tranquilizers, Dr. Ayd reports
in the current issue of Psycho
somatics, Journal of the Acad
emy of Psychosomatic Medi
cine. These drug distort or in
terfere with normal muscu
lar activities by disrupting
the extrapyramidal system,
which coordinates movement.
Although such neurologic
symptoms may occur at any
age, the chances are greater
as age increases; 70 per cent
of the bad responses were in
patients over 50. Akathisia
(jitters and anxiety) and Parkinson-like
rigidity appeared
three times as often in wom
en as In men, while dystonia
(stammering, facial grimac
ing, labored breathing and in
voluntary muscle movements)
occurred twice as often in
men.
