Portland, with Louise Maz
zuea chucking one-hit, 18-
strikeout ball, nipped the
Rogue Valley Dairy Maids
' w l) here last night to
weep a two-game series in
the Northwest Women's Major
Softball circuit.
The Florists, unbeaten in
the league, were victors on
Monday evening 5 to 1,
In addition to her stellar
pitching, All-American Maz
zuca had a hand in the offen
sive part of the Tuesday de
cision. She led off the third
inning with a two-base hit,
moved to third on a sacrifice
by Elsa Werronen and scored
on a triple by Roma Mcnold.
An error on a run-down en
abled Mcnold also to tally.
Some good fielding, partic
ularly on long runs for
catches in the outfield, helped
the Maids restrain the hard
iwatting Flower team, which
collected seven hits off Rogue
Valley pitcher Ellen Callag
Jian. Callaghan Singlet
It was Callaghan who
socked the lone Dairy Maids
safe blow. The blast was too
hot for first sacker Bev Wads
worth to field cleanly and El
len beat out the throw to first
base.
Mazzuca whiffed the first
even batters she faced and
had fanned 10 before the first
non-strikeout putout in the
fourth inning on a fly to sec
ond base by Doris Hickson.
The Lind thrower walked two
and hit one. Rogue Valley got
six runners on base and
threatened in the sixth inning
when a hit batter, error and
fielder's option got a runner
to third base.
No Florist got more than
one hit off Callaghan who al
lowed two bases on balls. The
Lind team had runners as far
as third, without scoring, in
the second, fourth and seventh
Innings.
RV shortstop Helen Wol
gamott had all three Maid
putouts in the first inning on
catches of Florists blows.

Piersall In
Forced Rest
Newton, Mass. - CTH - Jim
my Piersall has resigned him
self to an unwanted and in
definite period of rest, still
protesting that he is no more
tired than any other ball play
er. The 30-year-old Cleveland
Indian outfielder made no
effort to join the club in
Baltimore Tuesday, even
though he felt he was ready
to play.
"I'll go back when they
want me," he said Monday
night. He added that he had
not heard during the day from
either Indians Manager Joe
Gordon or Frank Lane, the
club's general manager, "I'll
just wait here until they call
me."
Piersall was ordered to take
a rest because, according to
Gordon and team doctors, he
had lost a lot of weight and
appeared to be ill. Jimmy said
he had lost six pounds, drop
ping to 174 a few weeks ago,
but has regained the weight.

They said the sudden Soviet
decision to break off the lu

been a concession to the Com

The Pelplng regime has bit

For City Team
Medford'i municipal swim

bers, Ken Lyons, city recre

again today.
The learn should have about
60 members, Lyons said, but
at present there are only
about 45. He added that some
160 youths had originally
registered for the team, but
many of them apparently lost
interest.
Boys and girls of neat ly all
ages are eligible for the team,
he said, because it competes
with other teams by age
groups. These age groups are
10 and under, 11-12, 13-14 and
15-16.
First meet for the team will
be against Grants Pass on
July 1 and 2 at the Haw

This meet will serve as a
warm-up for (he Medford re

following week end.
Youths who are interested
in turning out for the team

city hall or go to either of the
city's swimming pools for ad

It was also reported that to

the critical fire weather

A suggestion to Issue pro

presented at a special meeting
of the timber committee of
the Southern Oregon Conser

The recommendation was

Truman To Miss
Demo Convention
Independence, Mo. - U'PH -Former
President Harry S.
Truman said today he would
not attend the Democratic Na
tional Convention in Los An
geles next month.
The former chief executive
made his intentions known in
a telegram to Gov. James T.
Blair Jr., head of the Mis
souri delegation of which
Truman was an at-Iarge mem
ber. "I am resigning as a dele
gate," Truman told Blair. "I
am sorry I cannot be there
with you."
The telegram was released
by Truman's private secre

of heavy concentration of tim
ber sales.
The problem is most acute
during the spring when the
public agencies advertise the
many units which have re
ceived final preparation dur
ing the winter months, the
committee noted.
Lumber industry officials
and representatives of the
public agencies who attended
the meeting were in general
accord with this suggestion,
according to Dick Swan, Ross
Lumber company, chairman.
He emphasized that lite dis
cussion and tlie suggestions
offered at the meeting
were not intended as criti
cisms of the present sales pro
grams, but were brought out
as aids in solving a problem
of great importance to all
phases of southern Oregon's
forest industry.

It was reported that Ihe in

the summer months has cre

Final Meeting

The next meeting will be

Dale Prenlice, secretary
manager SOCTFA, reported
on safety activities and noted
that the lumber industry has
