White City was put on the
map April 1, 1960.
The story of the building of
this little industrial commu
nity on the ruins of the de
molished World War II site at
Camp White is one that gives
credit to the Oregon tradition
Courage and vision were
needed for the small group of
lumber interests who acquir
ed the land vacated by the
armed forces when the war
ended.
The courage was needed
when uncertainties as to the
future were dominant in the
northwest. Vision was re
quired to foresee the day
when industry rather than ag
riculture and recreation will
represnt the progress of the
region.
Demand for Lumber
The demand for lumber im
mediately after World War II
was at its height with home
building for the returning
GI's. The saw mills of the val
ley were humming and more
were needed. So there was a
natural incentive to establish
a timber processing nucleus
at this convenient point on
the Crater Lake highway,
with rail facilities and the
woods available, nearby.
But White City was envi
sioned as more than a tempo
rary operation. Homes were
built and an elaborate plan
for the future of a "little
Pittsburgh" adjoining Med
ford, was set in motion.
Headquarters were estab
lished at the old military base
next to the hospital buildings,
now forming the Veterans ad
ministration d o m i c i 1 iary.
Here the White City Terminal
and Utility company and a
realty company for White
City, opened offices. It still
functions as the operating
agency for the development.
Claim Residence
There was no post office
until this year and the Camp
White precinct was used by
the small group of voters who
claimed White City as their
residence. The town has no
officials as yet, and is depend
ent upon the county and state
for regular police protection.
It has its own fire equipment,
volunteer operated.
Such matters as water,
highway and other city im
provements are provided by
the interests which have been
promoting the project. Tele
phone service Is provided by
the Oregon Washington Tele
phone company from a cen
tral station on the premises.
Cooperation with the VA in
these matters has facilitated
such progress as has been
made.
This was especially note
worthy in the extension of
the water line built by the
army engineers from the res
ervoir back of Eagle Point. In
1954, this line was rebuilt
with steel and asbestos pipe
replacing the wood stave con
duit laid during the war when
steel was not available for
this purpose.
Work Together
The White City Realty and
the National Guard, occupy
ing the only remaining war
time buildings other than the
permanent domiciliary build
ings, worked together to hv

LUMBER SHEDS Above are some of the newer sheds
In the White City industrial area. Several companies use
stall the new pipe line. An ex
tension from the government
main enables White City to
have access to an adequate
water supply.
There have been numerous
disappointments and disasters
in this period.
A devastating fire in a saw
dust pile burned for days
sending smoke and ash over
the valley. This mill had been
doing an enormous business
without burners, as the size of
the sawdust pile indicated. It
closed down completely after
this incident.
Undertaking Curtailed
Then the bottom dropped
out of the lumber market.
One of the most ambitious un
dertakings for expansion,
backed by W. H. Daugherty,
one of the principal White
City operators, had to be curtailed.
Mills were idle for a spell,
but are operating in a limited
capacity today.
A favorable turn in lumber
sales developed when the de
mand for plywood began to
grow by leaps and bounds.
The effect was noted at White
City with attention to this
phase of wood working.
An active lumber market
in Arizona and southern Cali
fornia is reported by the S.P.
office here, and White City
mills have been sharing in
this outlet.
Enterprises Operating
A score or more enterprises
are operating, as listed on the
new directory posted at each
entrance to the White City
area. They include:
Carolina Pacific Plywood,
Cascade Wood Products, Cra
ter Wholesale Lumber com
pany, Delah Timber Products,
Eugene F. Burrill Lumber
company, Fir-Ply, Inc., Med
ford Forest Products, Med
ford Moulding company, Red
Blanket Lumber company,
Rogue River Wood Products,
Ross Lumber company. Trail
Creek Lumber company,
White City Box company and
White City Plywood company.
Flexibility and diversity to
meet the demand for . wood
Droducts are apparents in the
setup of each of these units
in the White City cog wneel.
Just now they are all engaged
in the remanufacture of lum
ber in various forms.
Moulding Produced
In addition to plywooa, sev
eral kinds of moulding are
produced in addition to pieces
'cut up to specifications.
Finished and semi - finished
products are turned out.
Ross Lumber company, one
of the largest mills in the val
ley, is now turning out wood
chips, used in the manufac
ture of paper.
W. H. Daugherty now has
an interest in several opera
tions and has just taken over
the Medford Forest Products
business, a gang saw mill, and
is engaged In virtually all
phases of lumber manufac
ture, including custom kiln
drying and surfacing of lum
ber. This company is in close
sheds in which to store lumber. Other sheds are used for
drying lumber.

touch with nationwide mar
ket conditions.
Sales units are springing up
at White City in addition to
Ross Lumber Sales and W. H.
Daugherty as well as the re
tail store maintained by the
Norton Lumber company on
Crater Lake highway, han
dling business materials generally.
Breaking away from lum
ber sales exclusively, White
City was found suitable for
the location of a huge Sears
Roebuck warehouse and
pick up" station and a re
cently completed building to
house the Pepsi Cola bottling
business for this district,
Great Western Chemical has
a supply station for distribu
tion of the mixtures used in
sealing and finishing ply
wood. White City comprises 1150
acres of the old Camp White
reservations. This does not in
clude supplemental business
interests that have been add
ed in recent years extending
from Four Corners to Eagle
Point along the highway.
The residential area near
the domiciliary consists of a
block of 31 homes, all occu
pied by families at the pres
ent time.

HOT PRESS This hot press at Medford
Veneer and Plywood company at White City
is typical of the type industry utilizing land
space which once was the Camp White mili
