Chemicals Used
In Pest Control
Slated for Study
Washington -(Science Service)-
The effects on America's
wildlife of chemicals used to
control agricultural pests will
be investigated by a special
committee appointed by the
National Academy of Sciences
-National Research Council.
The new Committee on
Pest Control'- Wildlife Rela
tionships is a response to a
growing concern among con
servationists that some of the
more recent chemical con
trols, while advancing both
agriculture production and
public health, may be harmful
to desirable wildlife.
Seeks Sound Program
The committee seeks to es
tablish a sound program for
effective plant protection
without causing permanent
damage to useful animals.
Among its functions will be
to provide guidance and tech
nical advice toward that goal;
to evaluate both the direct and
indirect effects of various pest
control operations on both
plants and animals; to stimu
late new research and en
courage current research now
in progress to get the neces
sary information for sound
guiding principles; and to
foster cooperation among the
various agencies and institu
tions with a legitimate con
cern in the areas of pest con
trol and wildlife conserva
tion. Effects Minimised
In the past, persons re
sponsible for pest-control pro
grams have tended to mini
mize the harmful effects of
chemicals used for this pur
pose on animal life. In some
i n s t a n ces, conservationists
have exaggerated the damage
to wildlife and ignored the
benefits they have contribut
ed to both farmer and con
sumer. Dr. Detlev W. Bronk,
president of the National
Academy of Sciences, express
ed the hope that the Commit
tee might achieve harmony
and understanding between
the two groups in "this in
creasingly important and
somewhat controversial field
of agriculture."
Coos Bay Man Files
Damage Suit Here
Jerome C. Rotert, Coos
Bay, is seeking $8,000 in gen
eral damages and $2,500 in
special damages as a result
of an accident involving John
Gustafson and Dean and Tay
lor Pontiac company, both
- of Medford.
According to the complaint
in the Jackson county circuit
court, Rotert alleges he suffer
ed permanent injuries in an
accident while he was help
ing move household furniture
on a pickup truck owned'by
Dean and Taylor and operated
by Gustafson June 20, 1958.
Rotert said he was riding
in the bed of the pickup truck
to steady the furniture when
the truck lurched forward
causing the furniture to shift
and throw him from the truck
onto the street.

Held in Jail Here

deputies returned James J.
Roberts, 27, Medford, to Jack
son county Tuesday, on
charges of uttering and pub
lishing a false check.
Roberts was arrested by
'Polk county authorities last
week. He is being held in the
Jackson county jail in lieu
of $1,500 bail.

26, is being held for Orange
