tain groups continue to press
for cither executive or legis
lative action that would pur
port to settle the long-standing
controversy by providing
for eventual if not early
homesteading of additional
wildlife lands," Society Pres
ident Carl W. Buchheister
said in a letter to Secretary
Seaton.
Asks Door Closure
"I am writing respectfully
to urge that in any action af
fecting this area, the door be
closed permanently to further
homesteading or reduction of
water supplies for the vital
Tule Lake refuge."
Tule Lake lies in an area
of fertile volcanic soils long
coveted by homesteaders and
land speculators. During the
past 50 years, the Audubon
society noted, drainage and
reclamation have reduced the
Tule-Klamath lakes and
marshes from an original ex
panse of 187,000 acres to less
than 25,000 acres at present.
Even so, the remaining
marshes accommodate and
feed three-fourths of the mi
grating waterfowl in the Pa
cific flyway - sometimes 8
million ducks at a time. The
ducks stay here several
weeks each fall when other
wise they would be dumped
into the agricultural valleys
of central and southern Cali
fornia before the crops were
harvested. Farmers would de
mand relief from reprada
tions and in such a situation,
the Audubon society says, the
waterfowl populations could
not be maintained at the lev
els which now make West
Coast duck hunting the best
in the nation.

were all established by ex
ecutive order. They may also
be reduced, or dismembered
for homesteading, by order of
a secretary of the interior.
Therein lies the danger.

us," Johansson said before
boarding a plane for a one
week vacation in Florida.
Johansson declined further
comment on the Louis offer,
which United Press Interna
tional learned was made to
Ingo on a $50,000-or-nothing
basis. Louis, who coached Pat
terson during his recent train
ing, wants $50,000 for his ad
vice to Johansson if he wins
back the title but he will ac
cept nothing if lngo loses.

ready. In the special game a Uni
versity of Portland all-star
team will face city league all-stars.

AAU track and field cham
pionships here Friday and

meter steeplechase; Amos
Marsh, 100 meters, and Bob

Olympic trials qualifications
starting tomorrow in a two-
day test of the National AAU
championships.
The meet, to be run at night
to avoid the blistering heat
that saturates this oil and
cotton-rich area, will qualify
six men in each event into the
Olympic tests at Stanford
July 1-2.

nto the finals for the men's
two -ball partnership golf
championship at Rogue Val
ley Country club.
They defeated Jerry Olson
and Max Miilhollin yesterday
in a semi-final, 3 and 2, and
will meet Bill Kuhlwein and
Randall Gifford for the cham
pionship. Kuhlwein and Gif
ford gained the finale last
