I've had the bo3s to dinner
and entertained royally, but
evidentally that's not enough.
The boss (who is past 50) took
quite a shine to mc. He and
his wife invited us out to an
evening on the town. He
danced with me all evening -until
I insisted I was too tired
- flirted, squeezed my hand,
played footsies under the
table and carried on like a
teen-ager.
I was embarrassed to death,
but my husband seems to
think the whole thing is very
funny and wants to set anoth
er date with him.
Morion S. - Gale is, was
and always will be, quite a
prude. She has absolutely no
sense of humor and becomes
insulted at the slightest hint
of flirtation or an even faint
ly off-color joke.
I saw everything the boss
was doing and I think he did
n't mean a thing by it. He's
a fun-loving old geezer and
likes to liven things up. As
a matter of fact I flirted with
his wife (who is quite attrac
tive for her age.) Does that
make me a lecher or some
thing? I didn't mean anything
by it.
Sure, I want to get ahead,
but I wouldn't use my wife to
do it. I just want her to stop
being so prissy and schooi-
marmish. She should lenrn to
relax and have a little harm
less fun.
The Council: At the risk of
being label schoolmarmish we
wouldn't classify fontsics-un-der
- the - table as a harmless
fun kind of game.
We'll agree that tastes dif
fer in the matter of fun, but
we think Gale has every right
to her taste too. She was the
one who was being mauled
and annoyed and she had a
right to show it.
, In some circles today the
term prude has a far worse
connotation than lecher. The
lecher is looked on with good
natured amusement, but there
is no salvation for the prude.
We don't think Gale ought
to be intimidated by such
name-calling. She should not
be forced to put up with flir
tation and advances that arc
distateful to her.
It is more than likely that
Morton is being dishonest
with himself. Possibly he is
amused that the boss, who is
above him every day on the
job, cannot get to first base
with his young, attractive
wife. If Gale responded fa
vorly to the boss' advances, he
would be far less amused. The
way the game is now played,
it is a kind of sex tease, which
enhances Morton's sense of
ownership of his wife.
We think Gale ought to
take some positive steps to
promote the kind of social re
lationship she and her hus
band can both enjoy. They
can have fun and relaxation
with other young corplos who
know how to enjoy life in an
atmosphere of good taste.

Teen-Age Problem!

some of the problems that
come up with
their teen-age
children. Re

which they
said that stud
ies made of
answers given

by many teen-agers to ques
tions, showed that their great
est concern is to be liked, and
to feel that they "fit in." Poll
afler poll has shown that the
youngsters are very sensitive
to the opinions of others.
Few teen-agers seem to ad
mire the unusual schoolmate
who has an excellent brain,
with some originality and
some ability to stand on his
own feet, and to go his own
way. Even in colleges the in
vestigators found that most
of the students look down on
the type of young man who
wants to go his own way and
has the courage and the
brains to do it.
Three-fourths of our high
school students seem to be
lieve that the most important
thing that they can learn is
how to get along with people.
Actually, they are very near
ly right on this point. This is
why I so distrust the modern
practice of parents who do
not believe in helping their
children in their efforts to
learn how to adjust to living
in this world.
Only 14 per cent of the
high school students inter
viewed placed academic learn
ing first in their list of re
quirements, and a similar
trend was found in the views
of college students. Some 60
per cent said they would rath
er be popular than brilliant;
and 71 per cent felt that per
sonality counts more than
grades when it comes to get
ting a job. This may well be
true.
To me, one of the saddest
findings brought out by the
polls is that the youngsters
are following many grown-ups
in their worship of the sup
posed wisdom of "the group
mind." Even in our universi
ties the research worker and
the man with a brilliant and
original mind keeps running
into opposition from men who
keep saying to him, "Bow to
the wisdom of the group."
Which means, "Don't do any
thing new."

Is There An Operation
For Constipation?
People ask me if there Is
any operation that will cure
severe constipation, and my
answer is that there is none
that I would recommend.
There is an operation on the
rectum that is said to cure
children with what is called
megacolon, or Hirschprung's
disease - in which the large
bowel becomes enormous, but
I doubt if this would be worth
trying by the adult with ordi
nary constipation.
Some 40 years ago a num
ber of surgeons tried to re
lieve constipation by cutting
nerves to the lower end of the
bowel, but I guess their re
sults were poor, because the
operations were soon given
up.
Some 50 years ago a few
surgeons tried removing the
large bowel, hoping thereby
to cure insanity with so-called
autointoxication or supposed
poisoning derived from re
tained excrement, but some
of the results were so bad and
so disastrous that all surgeons
stopped performing the opera
tion. I rarely find anyone
whose constipation is really a
big problem; and practically
always, then, I find a mildly
psychotic person with some
very queer relatives.
