Minimum Wage
Bill Expected To
Pass Committees
Washington -WPD- The Sen'
ate and House Labor Commit
tees were expected today to
approve similar bills to raise
the federal minimum wage to
$1.25 an hour and broaden
coverage to millions of
workers.
But versions would hike
the present $1 an hour wage
floor to $1.15 in the first year
and add five cents in the next
two years. The House commit
tee's bill would start the in
creases in November and the
Senate group's version would
begin the change in January,
Newly covered workers
four-million in the House bill
and about five-million in the
Senate plan would get the
present $1 an hour minimum
and move up to the $1.25 rate
in 12-month steps.
Other congressionel news:
Defense: The Senate began
the first of a series of "meet
early and stay late" sessions
leading up to adjournment
before the July political con
ventions. Attempts were ex
pected to increase the more
than $40 billion defense ap
propriation, which already
was about $1 billion higher
than President Eisenhower's
budget request.
Loyalty: The Senate was
expected to take final action
on a bill to repeal the writ
ten non-Communist loyalty
oath for students seeking fed
eral college aid.
Appointments: United
Press International learned
the Senate would decline to
act before the fall elections
on a number of President El
senhower's appointmments to
federal regulatory agencies.
The nominees would fill three
seats on the federal power
commission.
Foreign Aid: Conservative
Republicans and liberal Dem
ocrats joined in a move to re
store at least some of the
sharp cuts made by the House
Appropriations Committee in
the foreign aid program. But
some House leaders predicted
the trimmed bill would pass
late today.

InTregoff Case
Los Angeles-IIIPD-The prose
cution will "make no deal" to
dismiss murder charges
against Carole Tregoff, ac
cused with Dr. R. Bernard
Finch in the killing of the
surgeon's wife.
Chief Deputy District At
torney Manley Bowler made
that statement Wednesday
shortly before Miss Tregoff's
attorneys cancelled a sched
uled meeting with Bowler to
discuss dismissal of the murder-
conspiracy charges
against her.
Atty. Robert Neeb Jr., who
proposed the meeting with
the prosecution, cancelled it
when he learned of Bowler's
position. "We're just trying to
save the taxpayers money,"
Neeb said adding that it
would have been pointless to
go through with the parley.
Bowler said he wanted to
discuss with Neeb the possi
bility of Miss Tregoff being
used as a prosecution witness.

For Bomb Report
Washington (1IPD The FBI
announced Wednesday night
that Dr. Ingolf Theodore
Kvale, 62, Eugene, Ore., was
arrested in Spokane, Wash.,
on charges of making a false
bomb report against a North
west Airlines plane.
FBI Director J. Edgar
Hoover said Kvale reportedly
twice told a stewardess
aboard a Fortland-to-Minnea-polis
plane Tuesday night
that he had a bomb in his lug
gage. The plane, flight 536,
was delayed at Spokane while
a search was made. No bomb
was found.
Kvale was charged In Spo
kane with violation of the
false bomb report section of
the law governing destruction
of planes or motor vehicles.
He was the 18th person
charged with such a violation
since April 7.
Rifle-Carrying
Filipino Arrested
Manila -flJPD- A 22-year-old
laborer with a hidden rifle
was arrested by police outside
the University of the Philip
pines amphitheater shortly
before President Eisenhower
arrived there today.
Police identified the man
as Ruflno Acostay and said
he was being questioned.
Police said that at the time
ft his arrest the man was
selling "Welcome Ike" ban
ners near the spot where
Elsenhower would have pass
ed Into the University,
They said he had a .22-cali-ber
rifle wrapped in paper.
