The Cox vaccine, one of
several new live vaccines for
which licensing is now sought
In the U.S., is taken in one
oral dose. It contains three
types of live polio virus.
Type I virus and Type III
are responsible for perhaps I
00 of the world's paralytic
polio.
The Cox vaccine was report-
ed as 85 per cent, eueciive
against Type I and 97.2 effec
tive against Type III. It was
only 78.3 per cent effective
against Type II.
Voluntary Vaccinations
Dr. Herald R. Cox of the
Lederle Laboratories develop
ed the vaccine tested. With it,
more than 80 per cent of the
under-40 population of Dade
county (the Miami area) have
been vaccinated on a volun
tary basis. The Cox vaccine
has not been licensed, how
ever, for general use for fear
the harmless virus in the vac
cine might go awry and be
come dangerous.
The Dade county study is
not yet complete. Sewage
samples have been collected
nrf will be examined for the
presence ol polio viruses.

Gallipolis, O., to ask for com
ment on Dr. Barbara Moore,
the 56-yenr-old Briton whose
transcontinental hike was
stopped by a brush with an
automobile In Indiana.
Emma Galcwood's son, Mon
roe, answered the phone and
said "she's out for a short
walk" from Pittsburgh to Val
ley Forge. He said his mother
took the bus to visit her sister
Jn Pittsburgh, then decided to
stroll to the Revolutionary
War site 250 miles away.
Emma, 72, made history last
year when she walked from
Independence, Mo., to Port
land, beating the Centennial
wagon train.
Missile Machinist
Walkout Spreads

JO-day strike at Convair Wed
nesday spread to Douglas and
Lockheed Missiles and Space
Division when about 34,000
machinists and auto workers
walked off their jobs at mid
night. Picket lines were estab
lished at key missile bases
and could tic up the nation's
spaceage testing program.
The International Associa
tion of Machinists extended
Its strike to the Lockheed di
vision by calling off nearly
8,000 workers at the Sunny
vale, Calif., plant: about 2,000
at Van Nuys, Calif., and 1,000
at Vandenberg Air Force
Base, Calif., and Santa Cruz,
Calif.
Lockheed division officials,
however, said It would con
tlue operating Its plants and
Installations "as near norm-
lly as possible.
Powers Trial Said

Informed sources said that
there was reason to believe

publicly. They did not know
the exact dale of the trial.

for the 30-year-old pilot accus
ed of espionage after his U. S.
reconnaissance Jet plane was
hot down over Siberia on
May 1 Just before the Big Fojjir
summit conference.
