Convict, Gambler Key Figures
In Senate Probe Into Boxing
Waihington-l'PI) - A con
vict brought from a New
York State Prison today re
fused to tell Senate inves
tigators anything about
Frank Carbo, described as
. lhe "underworld cxar" of
boxing. The witness said he
had been threatened with
violence if he talked.
The prisoner, Irving Mis
hel, is serving a 10 to 20
year sentence at Clinton
State Prison for grand lar
ceny. He has been accused
of being an "underworld
banker" in fight fix at
tempts which ex-middleweight
champion Jake La
Motta testified to Tuesday.
By NORMAN G. CORNISH
' Washington-UPH-A witness
being brought from a peniten
tiary cell and an elusive Mi
ami Beach gambler became
key figures today in the Sen
ate investigation of boxing
which already has turned up
a tale of top-level fakery and
bribery from ex champion
Jake LaMotta.
The convict being brought
from New York state's Clin
ton Prison to the Senate hear
ing witness chair was Irving
Mishel, who is serving a 10
to 20 year term for grand
larceny.
Mishel has been accused of
being an "underworld bank
er" in fight fix attempts
which ex-middleweight title
holder LaMotta testified to in
opening hearings Tuesday.
The missing witness was
identified as Joseph DiCarlo,
who has been linked to a
$100,000 bribe offer to La-

LaMotta, known in his hey
day as "The Bronx Bull," told
the Senate antitrust and mo
nopoly subcommittee during
nervous appearance Tues
day that he had been offered
but refused the $100,000 bribe
to throw a June 6, 1947, fight
to Tony Janiro. LaMotta won
10-round decision over the
Youngstown, Ohio, fighter in
Madison Square Garden.
However, LaMotta testified
he "took a dive" in a later
fight the same year in a
match with Billy Fox. The ex
champion, who now lists him
self as an actor, said he did
in return for an under
world promise he would get
crack at the middleweight
title. But LaMotta said he
ended up paying $20,000 for
the arrangement.
Senate investigators said
law enforcement authorities
have been searching for Di
Carlo for the past 10 days.
They said he was believed to
be hiding out somewhere in
Florida.

Quiet Man
Art Wall
By LEO H. PETERSEN
UPI Sports Editor
Denver IUPII The "quiet
man" suddenly became the
"one to watch" today on
the eve of the U.S. Open
golf championship.
There's still plenty of
sentiment for "old pros"
Ben Hogan and Sam Snead
but the new red-hot locker
room tip is tht 36-year-old
Art Wall Jr. from Pocono
Manor. Pa., the leading
money winner of 1959, has
the shots and the persever
ance to lop the field of 150
in the four-round grind.
"I'm in fine shape physi
cally." said Wall in a state
ment that for him amounted
to a boast. "As for my
game, well. I'd have to say
it's pretty good. In fact,
everything seems "'to be
working."
WALL. CASPER GOOD
PUTTERS
Wall and defending cham
ion Bill Casper are con
ceded to be the best putters
in the tournament and Wall
is believed to have the un
erring approach shots to
master a course that the
oldtimers are saying is the
easiest on which a U.S.
Open ever has been played.
"Never mind what the
yardage says," commented
Hogan. "Any time you can
use an iron on your second
shot, you're playing an easy
course."
Wall, who was unable to
defend his Masters cham
pionship because he had
undergone an operation for
a kidney ailment, demon
strated that he was back on
his game last week with a
65-63-128 qualifying round
at Oklahoma City. And he's
been laying those second
shots right onto the greens
here with a precision that
matches anything he
showed in winning more
than $63,000 in 33 tourna
ments last year.
Honestly, wouldn't YOUR family
look good in this?

Patterson's Inability
To Avoid Rights Boosts
Support for Johansson
By JACK CUDDY
Newtown, Conn.-IUPD- Floyd
Patterson's apparent inability
to avoid right-hand punches
less than a week before his re
turn heavyweight title fight
with Ingemar Johansson
cause these two developments
today:
-The betting odds favoring
champion Ingemar to beat
Patterson Monday night
lengthened from 6-5 to 7-5.
-A poll of 20 American and
foreign sports writers, who
were ready to make their
picks, favored Swedish Inge
mar, 18 to two. The poll was
made right here in Floyd's
camp..
Four of the voters were
from Sweden and five from
England.
But Patterson, taking the
day off, declared: "Neither
the odds nor the poll mean
anything to me this time. I'm
not reading the papers this
time."
He explained he had eager
ly read the sports sections be
fore his first fight with Jo
hansson last June 26 and had
found himself a 5-1 betting
favorite and an overwhelming
choice in all polls. But under
dog Johansson knocked him
out in the third round and
took his title.
Defense Question Mark
With only two more spar
ring sessions remaining on 25-
year-old Floyd's schedule -Thursday
and Friday-his de
fense was a big question mark
although he was fast and ef
fective on attack.
The ex-champion was the
first to admit his lack of alert
ness against the right hands
of sparmates John Henry and
Julio Mederos in Tuesday's
three-round session.
"I showed nothin," he said.
I didn't feel in the mood. It
was a lazy day for me."
Improving his defense has
been the big job during
Floyd's 38 days here. Trainer
Dan Florio and advisor Joe
Louis have changed his style
from the feet-even and hands
even peekaboo stance to the
modified peekaboo, with the
left foot and left glove slightly
forward-to improve his balance.

Grossinger, N. Y. - WPD
Heavyweight Champion Inge
mar Johansson was to engage
in his final full-scale workout
today for his return title fight
with Floyd Patterson.
Following today's drill, the
handsome Swede began five
days of loafing to "store up
my strength" for next Mon
day's battle at the Polo
Grounds. Ingo followed the
same training pattern before
last year s fight with Patter
son.
Johansson also will under
go an official pre-fight medi

said the sprained back which
sidelined him last week still
painful "but it does not
affect my fighting."
The champion scaled 197
pounds following a brisk
workout Tuesday. He said he
feels "20 to 30 per cent better
than this time last year" and
hopes to weigh 196 on fight
night.
