Hears Legislator
A warning to be alert for
unsatisfactory business tactics
from out-of-state advertisers,
was given to the members of
the Jackson County Motor
Court association by Max P.
Weston, association president.
Speaker for the meeting
held June 8, was Mrs. Steph
en G. (Eve) Nye, stale repre
sentative from Jackson coun
ty. She discussed measures to
be brought up at the next
legislature and explained the
procedures of the interim tax
committee.
The next meeting of the as
sociation will be held July
13 at the Chuck Wagon cafe,
Man Held on Charge
Of Entering Church
Bobby Vernon Wright, 18,
of Mcdford, has been bound
over to the grand jury on
charges of burglary not in
dwelling, according to district
court officials.
He waived privilege of an
attorney and preliminary
hearing. Wright is charged
with entering the Zion Lu
theran on July 31, 1959. He
was returned here recently
from California.
Insured for Million
Firm Learns Who's
Hartford, Conn. An insur
ance company reports that its
average "life insurance mil
lionaire" !s a man, 44 years
old, with a wife and children
and a good job as a business
executive.
The company studied the
background of its 37 policy
holders whose lives are in
sured for $1 million or more.
Ages range from 30 to 59,
all but four are men, and
more than half are Involved
in manufacturing, finance, in
vestment or real estate.
Three of the women are
housewives with business in
terests, and the fourth Is an
'executive of a publishing
firm.
One, Two Day Trips
Scheduled by YMCA
One and two day trips for
boys aged 8 to 15 are being
planned by the YMCA this
summer.
The trips include: Mt. Iso-
bclla lookout, June 17, for
boys age 9 to 13; Oregon
Caves, July 8-9, for boys 10
to 15; Mt. Ashland, Aug. 10,
for boys 9 and up; and Union
Creek near Diamond Lake,
Aug. 17, for boys 8 to 12.
Registrations are now being
taken.
Leadership for the trips
will be the men and boys
who are staffing the YMCA
Day camp and Diamond Lake
camp.
Each trip will begin at 9
a.m. and transportation will
be by YMCA camp truck.
Registration is limited to 20
boys per trip.
First Place Award
Received by Club
The Medford Active club
has received an award for its
support of the School of
Hope, a school for retarded
children in the Jackson coun
ty area.
The first place honors for
projects award was presented
at the District 3 convention
of Active International held
May 21 through 23 in Eugene.
This is the second year that
the Mcdford Active club has
received this award.
The Medford club was also
runner-up for their newspa
per.
Delegates to the convention
were Gale Kimball, who rep
resented the local club in the
public speaking program;
Gary Meisner, Dr. Richard
Nelson, and Doug Taylor.

Mickey L. - Betty Is too

Mickey L. - I am 19 and in
my first year of college. I've
gone out quite a lot socially
but have never cared serious
ly about anyone until I met
Betty a few months ago.
Betty is nearly 18, but
hasn't dated very much and is
much too shy and restrained.
She is really a very attractive
girl and could be knockout if
only she'd warm up a little.
To get down to cases - I see
no harm in holding hands
during a date or a little cud
dling and kissing just for
goodnight. I don't mean
heavy petting and I wouldn't
be guilty of any ungentleman
ly behavior toward Betty, But
I certainly don't like her
shoving me away as if I were
poison when I try to warm up
to her. I feel I can help her
develop warmth toward the
opposite sex - if she'd give
me a chance.
Betty M. - I guess I could
say just the opposite about
Mickey of what he says about
me.
I like him very much and
I feel he could be a wonder
ful companion - if only he'd
learn a little more restraint.
He is constantly reaching for
my hand, giving me a little
hugs and pats or touching my
face or hair. He says it's
nothing at all, but I just don't
like it.
It's true that Mickey has
never been exactly ungentle
manly, but he can be annoy
ing. I have discussed this with
other girls and they agree
with him that I am too cold
and I'm going to have trouble
in later life, but my mother
says to save the loving for
the one I love. Of course,
Mom is stodgy about those
things and I guess I inherit
it from her. Is it serious?
The Council: It's very easy
for teen-agers to railroad one
another into attitudes com
pletely against their real in
clinations. These are the years
when they most want to be
liked - both by the crowd and
one individual of the opposite
sex.
, We therefore admire Betty
for having a clear understand
ing of her own feelings and
enough self - confidence to
speak for them. Probably her
good, honest relationship with
her mother has a lot to do
with that.
We urge Betty not to be In
timidated by what boys and
other girls tell her. Her dis
like of too free and casual
physical contacts is no sign

of coldness. It is natural for
her to want to save demon
strations of affection for the
time she sincerely feels the
affection.
Mickey's aggressiveness in
both physical and intellectual
spheres is no sign that he is
more advanced in his relation
ships with the opposite sex.
On the contrary, boys or girls
who seek constant casual phy
sical contacts lack self-assurance.
If they get a kiss or a
hug they feel they have
scored a triumph and this bol
sters their egos. Actually,
this; act may have littlo or no
meaning.
Mickey's statement that he
wants to "help" Betty is an
other sign of his insecurity
and lack of maturity. It is a
way of putting the girl on a
lower level. At his age, he
should be interested in friend
ships and social relations on
his own level. The best help
young people can give one
another is to learn to like one
another just as they are. It
should not be their concern
to change one another's feel
ings or attitudes. In this case,
we think Betty actually has
helped Mickey without even
trying-simply by being her
self. She has taught him that
a girl can like him even
though she doesn't give her
self freely.
