The Medical

Breast Cancer Patients
A recent 12-year study of
944 patients, reported by Dr.
Ian G. Macdonaid of Los An-

tended to shrink up.
A committee of the British
Medical Association just pub
lished the report of their study
of auto accidents. First, they
showed with the help of a
dummy car that even after
three whiskies or one and one
half pints of beer, a man will
steer poorly end will tend to
cross over onto the wrong side
of the road. A study of 376
deaths showed that someone
Involved had been drinking in
17 per cent of the accidents -and
here is a remarkable
point: someone had been
drinking in 62 per cent of
the accidents that occurred af
ter 10 p.m.
Actually, the committee be
came satisfied that the real
percentage of alcohol-produc
ed accidents is higher than
that admitted. An interesting
and significant finding was
that, while in Britain, in De
cember 1959, there were 881
deaths due to road accidents,
86 of these occurred on Christ
mas Eve.
Immediately, many people
rose up in England to try to
find some other explanation
for these findings besides the
drinking!
Causes For Suicide
In a recently-made analysis
of 102 attempts at suicide,
Drs. J. A. Harrington and K.
W. Cross concluded that in
about a quarter of the cases,
the person did not intend to
die: he or she Just wanted to
Influence or scare someone.
Among the 102 patients, 42
had had a mental breakdown,
and 22 had been in mental
hospital. In 20 cases, the per
son had previously made one
or more attempts at suicide.
In the cases of 27 women and
15 men, the reason for the
last attempt was an acute per
sonal conflict. Some persons
were under great stress, with
the loss of a job, troublesome
debts, or a housing problem.
Six had suddenly become psy
chotic. In 27 cases no pre
cipitating cause could be
found. At least half of the
persons were in a depression.
Parkinson's Disease
Recently, Drs. E. W. Gates,
of Niagara Falls, and Irving
Hyman, of Buffalo, reported
that accidentally they had dis

diabetic drug, Tolbutamide,

Key fo Cancer .
Fight Believed
Held by German
Chicago- (UPD -Experiments
begun in pre-Nazi Germany
may hold the key to the light
against cancer.
A Jewish surgeon ' forced
to flee Berlin in 1933 says
his experiments have led to
indications that bone marrow
Injections may hold a cure
to cancerous growths.
Dr. Paul Rosenstein, Rio
de Janeiro, wrote of his find
ings in the Journal, of the In
ternational College of Sur
geons.
Growth Organ Blamed
Rosenstein said that since
cancer is a growing substance,
is was reasonable to "infer
that an organ connected with
growth is responsible for its
occurance."
Bone marrow, which Is red
and in production in youth
and yellow and flabby in the
aged, seemed a likely suspect,
he said.
Rosenstein said he inject
ed bone marrow in several
cancer patients and found the
cancer disappeared.
One Eastern Prussian wo
man was treated with marrow
after cancer of the ovary had
spread through her body, he
said.
After the injections, Rosen
stein said, "tumors melted
like butter in the sun and
finally disappeared complete
ly."
Promising Results
The surgeon said bone mar
row injections also have
shown promising results In
persons suffering from leu
kemia and radiation expos
ure. Rosenstein said he began
the experiments In 1931 while
head of the surgery depart
ment at the hospital ot the
Jewish congregation in Ber
lin. He fled to Brazil in 1933
as Hitler rose to power and
continued his research there.
