Eisenhower Gets Briefing
On Air Defenses for Alaska

President Elsenhower's brief
Alaska visit has raised high
hopes in this new state that
American air defenses across
the top of the world will be
strengthened considerably
In the wake of Eisenhow
er's overnight stay at nearby
Elmendorf Air Force Base,
the first presidential visit to
the new state, Alaskan of
ficials, businessmen and the
general public are hopeful
they can get more missile
launching sites and retain a
fighter squadron now sched
uled to be deactivated.
President Briefed
A top secret briefing on the
Alaskan defense situation was
one of the items on the Eisen
hower schedule Sunday, after
he arrived here on the first
leg of this possibly perilous
23,000-mile journey to the
Far East.
Briefing officers for Eisen
hower's hostr Air Force Lt.
Gen. Fran!: A. Armstrong,
commander-in-chief of Alas
kan defenses, gave the Presi
dent a full picture of the air
defense situation here, includ
ing the 22 Soviet missile
launching sites known to exist
on Soviet territory just across
from Alaska.
Armstrong himself did not
undertake any "briefing" but
the President knows how he
feels about it. Armstrong re
cently said Alaska is "poorly
defended."
Spent Relaxed Day
The President spent a rela
tively relaxed day and night
here before he moved on to
day to Manila.
Upon arriving at Elmendorf
at 10:10 local time, the Presi
dent praised the "tremendous
achievement" of the Alaskans
in "mastering human re
sources for human good." He
said "you are no longer an
arctic frontier, you constitute
a bridge to the continent of
Asia and all its people." The
President was welcomed by
Alaska's Democratic Gov. Wil
liam A. Egan and Anchorage
Mayor George Byer in a brief
but impressive airport cere
mony. Eisenhower said that
as a bridge to Asia, Alaskans
"exemplify the stimulus of
freedom and its rewards in
spirit."

in Union City, N.J., died Sat.
urday.
Manila (UPD The Philip
pines was prepared today to
give President Eisenhower the
greatest welcoming celebra
tion ever seen in this young,
pro-American Asian republic.
Authorities predicted that a
million or more Filipinos
would jam Manila, many from
remote rural areas, to catch a
look at the American leader
when he arrives here Tuesday.
"Only the weather can spoil
things now," a jubilant gov
ernment official told United
Press International. He re
ferred to a tropical depression
which was lingering off the
Philippines, and threatening
heavy rainfall.
To the 24 million people of
the Philippine nation, Eisen
hower's visit will be one, big
homecoming celebration. Ei
senhower served in the Philip
pines as an Army major and
lieutenant colonel in the late
1930s as an aide to Gen. Doug
las MacArthur. ,
The National Labor Confed
eration, under intense pres
sure from almost all other
groups, including other labor
organizations, called off a
"peaceful demonstration"
scheduled for Eisenhower's ar
rival. Welcoming arches have
been built throughout Manila
with giant portraits of the
American President. Embar

touched one, near the Philip
pine Congress, that turned out
to be a remarkable likeness

ue Line Investment Survey
cautioned its readers Satur
day that most equities in the
business machine group cur
rently are over-priced in terms
of the next twelve months
and that future earnings are
already well discounted.
Many problems still con
front the industry, the sur
vey said, and these are not
only engineering ones.
The ultimate earnings po
tential from equipment leas
ing is greater than from out
right sales but costs are not
fully recouped for 3 to 4
years. The capital require
ments are so enormous, the
survey said, that all but the
strongest companies are in
danger of having to limit pro
duction to the length of their
credit lines.
The big entrenched manu
facturers are likely to grow
and prosper, it said, but some
of the smaller ones may well
fall by the wayside or disap
pear by merger.

swing is going to be of a sus
