Mn. F. R. - His wife Is cold
to us.
Leonard R. - They are wel
com to visit without invita
tions. Mrs. F. R. - My husband
and I are in our late 60s. We
recently sold the business In
which we have worked to
gether throughout our mar
ried life.
Now that we have more
time on our hands, we would
like to see more of our mar
ried children. Unfortunately,
only one of them, our 28-year-old
son Lenny, lives near
enough for us to make fre
quent visits.
However, Lenny's wife is a
very cold person and never
asks us over for dinner or an
evening of chat. But they
don't hesitate to call on us
any time they want us to
babysit. We don't mind help
ing, but we don't want to be
treated like servants. Lenny
says I have the wrong slant
on the whole thing.
Leonard R. - My mother
has always been very sensitive
about the way people treat
her and sometimes takes of
fense at nothing. My wife is
quite fond of Mother, but she
just isn't the type to gab over
the phone a few times a day
as Mom would like.
I don't feel it should be
necessary to extend formal in
vitations to parents. My par
ents know they can come any
time they like. We would
open the door wide any time
they arrived.
It never occurred to us that
Mom and Dad might object to
babysitting. We thought they
loved to come here and spend
an evening with their grand
children. Many times they
have said it's no burden at all
for them. Now, all of a sud
den, they are resentful.
The Council: It's apparent
that these parents have good
reason to feel offended.
Babysitting is a pleasure to
most grandparents, but it is
also a chore. The responsi
bility is no small one and
young children are often far
too energetic for the limited
strength of elderly grandpar
ents. Most of them take on
the job not merely to please
themselves, but to do some

Bend IUPD A crash con

for U.S. Senator.
Mrs. Neuberger was featur
ed speaker at the annual sum
mer convention of the Oregon
Wildlife Federation here;
She blamed the current ad
ministration for "failing to
convey a sense of urgency'
about resource matters and of
trying to "lull" the American
people into thinking the prob
lem was a minor one.
President Eisenhower's veto
of the Blatnik bill to provide
federal assistance to local
communities in water pollu
tion control i programs was
sharply criticized by Mrs.
Neuberger.
Dr. Marquis Gets
University Award
Eugene - (UPD - Dr. Lucian

of Oregon faculty was pre
sented with the highest award
given to a member of the uni
versity's teaching staff here
Sunday. The award was giv

Dr. Marquis, a member of
the faculty it Oregon for the
past six years, was presented

Science Shrinks Piles
New Way Without Surgery
Stops Itch
ftrw Trk, R. T. (SU1 - For th
first ttms science has found a new
nesting substance with the aston
ishinx ability to shrink hemor
rhoids, stop Itching. nd relieve
pain - without surgery.
In esse after case, white gently
relieving pain, actual reduction
(shrinkage) took place.
Most amssingef all-results were
o thorough that sufferers made
thing helpful for their chil
dren. Parents are as accustomed
to giving as children are to
receiving, but as the years go
on the situation tends to re
verse Itself. Some children
rebel against taking. Others
woum be willing to take, but
the parents find themselves
able to give less. Eventually
even financially indeDendent
parents find themselves on the
taking end in terms of imn.
Hons. They may become quite
dependent upon their children
for companionship and psy-
cnoiogicai upiut.
We don't think the F.R.'s
have reached this stage. As
long as they can be physically
active they can find amuse
ment and interests on their
own, but they do feel a little
Insecure about the future
They want to know whether
or not they have a strong and
deep relationship with their
son and his wife.
We don't think Lenny's
statement that his door is open
to his parents at any time is
sufficient reassurance or
sufficient invitation. Farents
who do not feel free to visit
children unannounced usually
sense a negative attitude on
the part of their child and his
mate.
