falsehood."
He said these charges con
tained in the "last-minute
wire" from Frick, were "cal
culated to frighten United
States Senators and terrorize
the American Legion and high
school baseball g.oups into
registering a stream of pro
tests. "This charge was not only a
deliberate falsehood, but a
new low for the administra
tive office of our so-called Na
tional pastime in its effort
to block progressive legisla
tion," said Rickey.
Rickey contended 4hat the
Frick wire was evidence of
"organized baseball's acceler
ating fear of approval for the
Kefauver All-Sports bill," a
measure now being consid
ered by the Senate judiciary
committee which the Contin
ental league says is necessary
to make possible its formation
and operation.
Rickey's wire to the com
mittee read as follows:
"The Continental league is
utterly opposed to the em
ployment of high school play
ers or American Legion play
ers and goes further than
that. The Continental league
will oppose the signing of col
lege players if the major
leagues will agree to It. Neith
er I nor anyone else con
nected with the Continental
league has ever said that the
league intended to take
American Legion or High
school players. We are consti
tutionally opposed to it."
The telegram, signed by
Rickey, was addressed to
Sens. James O. Eastland ID
Miss.), Estes Kefauver (D-
Tonn.), and Philip A. Hart ID

state game commission here

als approved two weeks ago.
Final rules call for 23 days
of general deer hunting, 12
days of elk hunting along the
coast and 30 days in the rest
of the state, and an antelope
hunt of five days.
Buck season will run from
Oct. 1 through Oct. 23 with
the last nine days open to
cither-sex deer hunting on a
unit permit basis. A total of
125,000 unit permits will be
issued in the 62 big game
management units.

hunts in November are on tap
for holders of unused deer
tags in areas along the Colum
bia river from Hood River to

man Cup tennis series Satur
day when its doubles team of
Christine Truman and Shirley
Brasher pulled out a 6-4, 9-7
victory in the gathering dusk
against two gallant Americans
who had saved seven match
points.
A crowd of 4,000 went wild
when Janet Hopps of Seattle,
Wash., and Dorothy Knode of
Forest Hills, N. Y., failed to
get their rackets on a Truman
lob that sent them racing to
the baseline. It was only Bri
tain's sixth victory in what
has generally been considered
the most one-sided of interna
tional sports competitions.
The doubles triumph in the
final match gave Britain's
women stars a 4-3 victory in
the two-day, seven-match com
petition. It also climaxed a
dogged British drive in which
they never led until Miss Tru
man's lob plopped safely for
the point that won the cup.
Tension-Filled Match
The Americans had taken a
2-1 lead by winning two of
Friday's three matches. Miss
Truman pulled Britain even
by whipping Karen Hantze of
San Diego, Calif., in today's
first match, 7-5, 6-3. But Dar
lene Hard, the chunky blonde
from Montebello, Calif., who
starred in a losing cause, im
mediately put her team in
front again with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1
victory over Ann Haydon.
Angela Mortimer then set
the stage for the tension-filled
final match when she pulled
Britain even at 3-all by rally
ing to defeat Miss Hopps, 6-8,
6-4, 6-1.
Miss Hopps, the United
States captain, developed a
painful cramp in that match.
The final doubles did not
produce the best tennis of the
competition but it was easily
the most dramatic with the
highly partisan crowd, desper
ately anxious for a British
win, cheering and applauding
every point on the No. 1 court.
Miss Hopps and Mrs. Knode
quickly took a 4-0 lead in the
first set by playing Mrs.

and took the lead at 6-5 on the
giant Briton's net play.

saved one match point on Miss
Brasher's error to break back
to 6-6. In the final game the
Americans saved six match
points mostly by playing Mrs.
