Arrested for Theft

A 15-year-old Gold Hill boy
is being held in the Jackson
county juvenile detention
home on charges of auto
theft, the Jackson county
sheriff's office said today.
He was apprehended yester
day by Floyd Taylor, Gold
Hill police chief. The car is
owned by Courtesy Chevrolet
company, Medford, the sher
iff's office said.
The boy also admitted tak
ing tow other cars, they said.
The youth apparently was
joy-riding, according to the
report.

COMPLETES COURSE
Capt. Gene C. Rae, son of
Mrs. Selma Rae, 819 Bennett
St., Medford, completed the
officer chemical, biological
and radiological course re
cently at the Seventh Army
Training center in Vilseck,
Germany.
The captain, a 1943 gradu
ate of Medford High school,
entered the Army in July,
1943, and arrived overseas,
on this tour of duty, in Feb
ruary. He also attended
Southern Oregon college.

whose wife, Loda, lives at
1316 Beatty St., Medford, re
cently participated in a
bridge - building exercise in
Germany.

EMIL GEORGE NELSON
Ashland - Emil George Nel
son, 68, of 442 Terrace St.,
Ashland, died June 9 at his
residence. He was born March
14, 1892, in Hemnes, Norway.
He is survived by four
brothers, Julian Nelson, Ar
thur Nelson, and Conrad Nel
son, all Roseburg, and Martin
Nelson, Portland.
Mr. Nelson was a veteran
of World War I. He moved to
Ashland nine months ago from
Roseburg.
Funeral arrangements will
be announced by Litwiller's
Funeral home, Ashland.

Dead Man Elected
To GOP Committee
San Francisco-fllPD-A man
who was killed last month
was elected to the Republi
can central committee in'
Tuesday's primary election.
Stuart L. McCIure died in
an automobile accident.
Final tabulations showed
that McCIure, a public rela
tions counsel and former
newspaper man, led six other
candidates for the committee
post from the 24th district.
After he was killed, it was
too late to remove his name
from the ballot - so the com
mittee will fill his position
by appointment.
Lumber Prices
Show Big Decline
Portland -flfD- Crow's lum
ber price index showed
sharp decline in all segments
during the two week period
ending Thursday.
The 25 green Douglas Fir
items declined an average of
98 cents per 1,000 board feet.
Plank and timber items re
mained firm but lower prices
were noted in both boards and
framing lumber.
A heavy supply of transit
cars at the end of May was
partially responsible for the
price decline, Crow's stated.

public schools has been set
for Monday, June 20, at 8:30
a.m. at McLoughlin Junior
High school, according to
school officials.

work with emphasis upon the

the social security office to
file a claim for benefit pay
ments may save themselves a
second trip by checking In
advance to find out what
proofs are needed, according
to Edward B, Jacobson, dis
trict manager of the Medford
office of the Social Security
administration.
"One telephone call prior
to the first visit can often
eliminate further visits," he
said. "There are certain proofs
that are needed in each case.
By finding out what they are
and bringing them along the
first time, the claimant can
usually complete the entire
filing procedure in one inter
view."
"It's never too early to
start getting needed proofs,"
Jacobson stated. "When the
claim is filed, the time al
ready spent in obtaining the
required proofs will be more
than offset by earlier receipt
of the first check or checks."

In the elementary program
in grades one through six,
two categories of students are
accepted: one group which has
not quite made the passing
minimum for the grade level
because of illness, absences,
or other reasons; and a second
group which has barely met
promotion minimums and is
recommended to summer
school for strengthening.
Students in grades 7
through 12 are recommended
to summer school for making
up lost academic credits. In
the case of grades 9 through
12, many students take a new
subject for credit In order to
increase their program of
elective subjects the next
school year.
Recommendation Noodod
School officials said that a
recommendation from the stu
dent's teacher and principal
is needed for summer school
attendance at the elementary
level. The student's own grade
status determines his attend
ance from the secondary
schools..
Also offered this year will
be personal typing and driver
training classes for high
school students.
The elementary class sched
ule will be from June 20 to
July 22 from 8:30 a.m. to
noon. Junior and senior high
school classes will be at the
same time from June 20 to
July 29.
All classes will be held at
McLoughlin Junior High
school, and no tuition fee for
residents of District 549C
will be charged.
