month, but if his income were
$9,001, he would pay $60,

annual meeting of the Amer
ican Association of Plastic
Surgeons showed how opera
tions can transfer bones, ten
dons and skin from one part
of the body to another to re
build a Usable hand.
Ten patients of Drs. Wil
liam H. Frackelton and Jack
L. Teaslcy, Milwaukee plas
tic surgeons, came to the meet-
ng to show what had been
done for them. Most of the
men had been injured in in
dustrial accidents in which
fingers were crushed, skin
torn away, nerves and ten-
ins severed. .
Eight had a scries of opera
tions that enabled them to use
llicir hands. Seven could re
turn to their former jobs.
Only two had to have amputa-
ons and had to be fitted with
artificical hands.
A single finger with sen
sation and movement," the
doctors said, "performs better
than any artificial hand thus
far conceived."
One of the men had lost
four fingers from his right
hand, retaining only the index
finger. An operation that
transformed tendon and skin
and deepened the cleft be
tween his forefinger and the
stump of his thumb enabled
him to write and pick up ob
jects.
Reporting on seven opera
tions on small children born
without thumbs or with a
rudimentary thumb, the Brit
ish surgeon, Dr. David N.
Matthews of the Hospital for
sick Children In London said
that in each case he turned
the child's index finger into
a useful thumb by shortening
it- and shaping the discarded
bone into a peg. He then fit
ted one end of the peg into
the hand and the other into
the forefingers.
