Water of Rats

- A chemical that has the ear
marks of an oral contracep
tive has been tested on rats
and it works. But here is the
catch.
Scientists have not been
ble to find out in which sex
the drug acts.
Dr. W. G. Spector of the
University College Hospital
Medical School here found
that fairly high doses of the
drug in the drinking water of
rats would prevent all preg
nancies. Not only the females
but also the males drank the
water since they had to bo
in the same cage at the same
time to test the pill's effects.
The biggest problem at the
moment seems to be finding
a way to separate the drink
ing water supplies with hand
ling the animals so much that
their normal mating behavior
is disturbed.
Constricts Blood Vessels
It may be safe to say the
drug, l-methyl-2-phenoxy-
ethyl hydrazinum, acts in the
female, Dr. Spector reports
in the journal Nature. It is
capable of constricting blood
vessels and such an occur
rence would prevent the uter
ine wall from preparing for
pregnancy.
On the other hand, there is
also reason to believe that
the drug may affect the hor
mone balance associated with
fertility in the male or preg
nancy in the female.
Regardless of how and
where the drug acts, it is
safe. Dr. Spector said It had
been given to rates in doses
twice as large as the effective
dose for several months, and
there were no delectable side
effects.

System here which keeps
track of all the metal man has

who track the satellites also
predict their future locations.

aware of all objects, both
friendly and hostile, in orbit,
passing over the North Amer
ican continent.

launching May 24 of a Midas
Satellite bearing an infrared
detection device: Sir William
Herschel, a Bath, England,
fiddler and composer.
In 1800, in his spare time
he experimented with a ther
mometer and a glass prism
that divided white light into
rainbow prism. He observ
ed that the temperature rose
higher in red light than in
blue.
When he placed the ther
mometer just outside the red
end of the visible spectrum,
he found the thermometer
went even higher. He guessed
there must be an invisible
light (infrared) that made the
temperature rise. On this sim
ple discovery, all Infrared de
vices are based.

tions, subliminal techniques
may strengthen the way ob

see, Drs. Michael Goldstein
and Richard Barthol of the
University of California, Los
Anpeles. have found.
They experimented with in
cidental (subliminal) stimuli
amog groups of college stu
dents. One group was shown
slides of human figures en
gaged in some sort of activ
ity. Positive words such as
success, laugh, happy, love
were briefly superimposed on
some of the slides.
In another group, negative
words such as failure, cry,
anger and hate were superim
posed on the same group of
slides.
Slides Out of Focus
The same experiments were
repeated in other groups
with slides out of focus so
that they were fuzzy, but hu
man figures were still identi
fiable. Students In all groups were
asked to tell a story about
each slide. The stories were
tape recorded.
Analysis of tne stories inai-
cated that in groups viewing
slides in focus there was no
apparent subliminal influence
on stories about the snacs,
Among those viewing "fuzzy"
slides there was an influence,
with the positive group tell
ing positive toned stories and
vice versa. Subjects did not
recall seeing the briefly sup
erimposed words.
May Influence Perception
The UCLA psychologists In
terpreted these results to
mean that when people are
viewing pictures with strong
visual cues, subliminal "mes
sages" do not get through. But
if the cues are not strong, In
cidental stimuli, even though
brief, may influence the tone
of the general perception of
of the pictures meaning.
Tiros Slows Down;
May Need Boost

the weather satellite stable
In orbit, is slowing down.
Within a few days, the satel
lite may need a rocket boost
signaled from the ground.
The radio signal will set
off small rockets attached to
Tiros. These are designed to
set Tiros spinning again
When Tiros was launched
April 1, the National Aero
nautics and Space Adminis
tration expected the spin-up
would be required every 20
days. But nearly two months
have passed without the satel
lite's spin slowing to the point
where spin-up was necessary,
Now, however, it has slow
ed to just over nine revolu
tions per minute. At about
nine rpm it must be speeded
up or it will be In danger of
tumbling. The tumbling
would turn Tiros' cameras
away from the earth so that
its cameras could not take
pictures of earth's cloud cover
as intended.

Moving of State
Agencies To Salem
Proves Hot Potato

Salem - IUPD - Moving the
neaaquarters o . state agencies
from other cities to Sakm is
perhaps the hottest potato to
date of the Hatfield adminis
tration. And It's not done. It's bare
ly in the cooker.
The test case is Gov. Mark
Hatfield's mandate to the
Public Welfare Commis
sion to move Its headquarters
staff of some 155 out of the
State Office building in Port
land by the summer of 1961.
He wants them in the Capitol
Mall by then and told the staff
to got busy now with plan
ning.
Brickbats have been logged
so far from various Portland
groups; members of the Legis
lature, including some Repub
licans; professional welfare
groups, and from the welfare
agency itself.
Hatfield Convinced
Hatfield is taking it calmly
because he is convinced the
plan Is in the state's best in
terest. Several other agencies have
been told to expect orders for
shifting their headquarters to
Salem, when space becomes
available. These include the
Health Department in Port
land and the State System of
Higher Education in Eugene.
Hatfield emphasizes, however,
each move will be considered
on its own merits and will not
be made if there are "com
pelling reasons" against it.
Chancellor John R. Rich
ards of the state system said
he has been Informed by state
officials here that movement
of the higher education staff
to Salem would be a "physical
impossibility" for five years.
A staff of 16 is involved at
Eugene. Richards added he
assumes the move will also
involve his 32-member comp
troller staff at Corvallis;
Reason Explained
Hatfield put out a state
ment May 23 telling why he
thinks the walfare move is
sound
A footnote adds that only
Delaware, Nevada and Ore
gon established headquarters
for state welfare agencies out
side their capitals.
Misunderstanding
Proponents say there has
been a misunderstanding
about what Hatfield wants to
do, but It may be his own
fault.
He made a facetious crack
at a Board of Control meet
ing sometime back about sell.
Ing the State Office building
in Portland because it Is al
ways under repair.
He later said he was kid
ding, but not until the state
ment had been circulated
throughout the state. Aides
say the statement has no con
nection whatsoever with the
welfare move.
Still, the impression was
that Hatfield wanted to with
draw all state agencies not
now in Salem and cluster
them here in a sort of power
show. The aides say not only
is this untrue, but they point
out that most state agencies
are already headquartered in
Salem.
In every instance, branch
offices will be retained where
headquarters are moved
away.

The comet is of 19th magni
