entitled "A

chiatry." It is
written by an
able man, Dr.

York City, and it tells of the
painful experience he had
with a prominent child psy
chiatrist when he sought help
for his mentally retarded twin
hnvs. Dr. May tells us that
the psychiatrist treated him
heartlessly and discorrteous
ly, as if he were a slow-witted
layman who knew nothing ot
medicine. There was not the
slightest show of friendliness
or sympathy for a fellow-doc
tor faced by a terrible prob
lem and a great sorrow.
Right off, Dr. May was told
that he and his wife were
responsible for the mental
trouble of the twins. The par
ents "were culprits who were
reluctant to admit their crim
inal rejection of their chil
dren, and the harm they had
done them." As the analyst
said, in the next five years
this skulduggery would have
to be confi-ssed by them dur
ing the course of two very
expensive courses of psycho-
nalysis. But when '.he analyst
discovered that Dr. May was
research doctor on a moder-
te salary, he instantly dis
missed him and put him out
of the office with a bill "in
three figures."
Children Not Examined
Dr. May had expected that
there would be some examin
ation of the twins with special
tests, but he soon learned that
few analysts are ever Interest
ed In making any examin
ations of the patient. Why
examine when they know all
the answers the minute the
patient comes in?
Eventually, after some
search, Dr. May found a Child-
guidance Clinic to which he
could afford to go; but, Rgain,
he found no one interested in
examining the children; and
soon he was forced to con
clude that there is no relation
between psychoanalysis and
scientific medicine. When Dr.
May asked for electroenceph
alograms, the analysts belit
tled the value of such exam
inations and refused to be
bothered with them.
Again, at the Clinic, Dr.
May found that no one had
any doubts abou. his great
guilt: and in dealing with the
problem, the only concern of
the people In charge seemed
to be to trap him and his
wife into admitting some
thing that would fit in with
their pre-conccived and fixed
idea that the twins had been
rejected. Dr. May had the
strength to stand up against
this abuse: he knew that he
and his wife had treated their
boys only with love and affec-

perhaps, in some way, she
might be guilty.
Dr. May then went to a big
medical library and, for
months, in all his spare time,
he read widely in the field of
psychiatry. As he says, he
learned that for the last 40
years, tne rreuaians nave
elected to study only f the
stressful emotional reactions,
and not the real workings of
the brains of animals and
men. They have been nice a
heart specialist who never
cared' to study a heart, but
only the patients' psychic re
actions to their palpitations or
shortness of breath.
Analysts C ise Minds
As Dr. May wrote, the an
alysts have closed their minds
to all influences of Heredity;
also, they have refused to face
the fact, so greatly against
their theory, that four out of
five children In a lovely fam
ily, are often normal, while
one is mentally retarded or
insane. With their fixed ideas,
the analysts have been hor
ribly cruel to many poor par
ents. Finally, with all this, It is
hard to say if over they have
really made over a mentally
retarded or psychotic child. I
wish a million people In
America would read Dr.
May's book. Perhaps, then,
more analysts would be will
ing to give up this terrible
practice of beginning their
work by breaking the hearts
of the parents of mentally re
tarded or mentally disturbed
children.
