Washington-The man who
supervised the "snooping
Into all the homes of the coun
try-he estimates that they
added up to about 60 million
homes-has a one-story, seven
room house of his own that
delights him and his family.
But Wayne F. Daughcrty
chief of the housing division
f the Census Bureau, was not
impressed when he first saw
his home, then a newly built
stucco and brick rambler. The
cul-de-sac on which it stands
In suburban Falls Church,
Va., was new and the road
as yet unpaved. Daughcrty
told the National Association
of Home Builders:
"I didn't see much sense in
going in to look at the house.
It seemed smaller than what
we wanted. But my wife, who
had spotted it that afternoon,
wanted to see the inside. It
turned out the house was
every bit as large as we
wanted."
' That was 10 years ago. The
Daughertys bought the house,
the road has long since been
paved, and today, lawns and
shrubbery are as well-established
as the tall trees in the
neighborhood.
The man whose job right
now is to know about the
type of homes others live in,
had rather modest, although
definite, ideas of what he
wanted when he bought his
house.
"We wanted a rambler." he
said, "because we were im
pressed witn onc-siory nouses.
We wanted cross-ventilation
jn the bedrooms, a fair-sized
lot and a place reasonably
close to schools."
The Daughertys have two
Sons - Wayne, Jr., who was
graduated from the local high
school five years ago, and
Douglas, who will be a gradu
ate this June.
Walls Are Gnen
. Their home has a light
green walled and carpeted liv
ing room, a dining room, a
recreation room where one
wall is adorned by a colorful,
Mexican straw hat four feet
in diameter, a modern kitch
en, three bedrooms-all with
cross-ventilation - and . two
bathrooms.
. One of the things about the
house that delights the Census
Bureau's housing chief is that
it has been "flexible." He has
been able to push it out and
make it grow.
What originally was the ga
rage has been made into a
recreation room. Mr. Daugh
erly added a new garage, a
icw yards from Ihe housc-and
built a covered porch in the
space between. The porch Is
a handy storage area in win
ter and a nice place to sit in
cummer.
He also knocked out a wall
between the living and dining
rooms, to give this area an
open look. His latest venture
was to cut an extra door into
the recreation room, which
now can be entered from both
the kitchen and dining area.
Mr. Daugherty's pride is the
fireplace "which has never
smoked," and which has a
new type grate that slants
backward "so the logs just
roll back on their own."
Mrs. Daugherty said she
likes having "everything on
one floor."
Much as he enjoys his
home, Mr. Daughcrty is spend
ing less time in it these days
than usual. Supervision of the
housing census is requiring
him to do a certain amount
of traveling.
While every family was
asked some questions about
their house, every fourth fam
ily was questioned more ex
tensively on this subject by
the Census caller. The enu
merator also recorded his or
her own observation on the
condition of the house-if it is
sound, deteriorating or di
lapidated. Preparation for the housing
census i.irtcd in 1957. Mr.
Daughcrty said it will be the
spring of 1963 before all the
information o b t a i n ed on
homes is processed com
pletely. He pointed out this Is only
the third national housing
census. The first questions
about houses on a coast-to-coast
basis were asked in
1940. In 1950, 46 million
housing units were counted.
He said that "great changes
in housing" have taken place
in recent years. He termed
"extremely significant" the
sharp increase in home own
ership. But he said that hous
ing standards also have risen.

Mrs. Clifford Aldrich, (Miss
Pat) was guest speaker for
a meeting of the Travel Study
club, Oregon Federation of
Women's Clubs, held last
Tuesday, in the Fireplace
room at the Girls Community
club.
Mrs. Aldrich spoke on "I
Goofed my Way Over
Europe." Mrs. Aldrich and
Miss Karen Johnson, Yreka,
Calif., flew to New York and
took the Icelandic trip to
Norway. They each took a
small overnight case, and a
large handbag; this was their
only luggage.
She told of their experien
ces in Norway, Sweden, Hol
land, Germany, Spain, Italy,
French Morrocco, mentioning
that they visited all of the
European countries and the
British Isles. She showed
dresses, materials, and jewel
ry that she had purchased
abroad
Mrs. AldVich mentioned
that they were guests of a
family in Norway and while
sight-seeing traveled many
places by public conveyance,
thereby saving money. In
Spain they took dancing les
sons and attended the bull
fights. She also modeled one
of the dresses she had had
made in Italy, saying it had
been completed in three hours
and cost but $10.
The two women were in
French Morrocco during one
of the uprisings, and she de
scribed her visit to the Cas-
bah. u .
Preceding the talk Mrs.
Clay M. Lee, president, pre
sided at a business meet
ing. Mrs. Carl W. Peterson,
Ashland, past First District
president, and Mrs. Lee gave
reports of the Oregon Federa
tion of Women's Club's con
vention In Portland.
Mrs. Gertrude Bartlett,
Ashland, gave two poems,
"Happiness" and "The Fool?"
which she had written. Mrs.
Lee closed the session with a
thought for the day on happiness.

tip a table arrangement from
which refreshments were
served. Pouring were . Mrs
Lee and Mrs. Peterson.
Hostesses for the afternoon
were Mrs. Norman Wade,
Mrs. Jason Ottinger, Mrs,
Willis T. Fasel, and Mrs. Wil
liam E. Boon.
Guestsoof the club were
Mrs. Mae Russell, Mrs. Bart
lett, and Mrs. Aldrich.
This is the last meeting of
the club until September.
There will be a picnic ,at
Mrs. Edward C. Hoot s nome
for meirfoers and their hus
bands the latter part of June.

To Attend School
Tiller - Argyle Matthews,
principal of Tiller school, and
his family will spend their
summer vacation at Durant,
Okla. Mr. Matthews will di
vide his time between attend
ing South Eastern college,
working toward a master's
degree, and fishing. He hopes
to better the catch he made
in the South Umpqua river a
few days before he left. The
trout he caught measured six
teen inches.
