A Child With Foul
Intestinal Gas
A mother writes wanting
to know why her little boy is
often passing gas that has a
foul odor. My
impression is
that usually
children who
do this are un
able to digest
properly some
one food. Per
haps they are
allergic to it.
The question
is, how is the
mother to find which food it
is? If the chid passes the foul
Kas only once a week or so,
the mother should keep a rec
ord of the unusual foods eat
en a few hours before. Then,
after the child has had three
or four spells, it may be ob
vious that every one of these
times the child has eaten eggs
or fish or chicken or some
thing. Then the child should
stop eating that food, and
that is thiO end of the gas
formation, the problem
solved.
If the child forms the gas
every day, then the offending
food, If there is one, must be
one that is consuMed per
haps every morning. The
commonest one Is milk. I ask
the mother to give the child
for two or three -days, only
oatmeal and rice with abutter
and sugar, broiled lamb and
canned pears for dessert
nothing else besides water. If
the gas stops coming, then
the mother must, each day,
add a new food to the diet.

Child Became Brighter
Incidentally, I have known
of a few cases like this in
which, when the harmful food
was discovered and taken
away, the child became much
brighter at home and at
school. It became obvious
that the poorly-digested food
had been depressing the
child's brain. Often these
children are decidedly dull,
and perhaps ailing, with a
sore and bloated adbomcn on
Monday. Why Monday? Be
cause on Sunday the family
has a chicken or a pork roast,
or the, children, go to grand
mother's, where Ihey eat a lot
of chocolate or nuts or other
food which they do not get
every day.

I remember a lad from ajby sending 25 .cents and
very able family who, in his
sophomore year at college.
became so mentally dulled
that he flunked out. At this
time he got? a sore bloated
abdomen, afld much foul gas.
Then, with the "elimination
diet," I found that he was
highly sensitive to eggs. He
was eating five of them, for
breakfast, and when he
slopped touching this food, he
not only lost his abdominnal
pain and his gas, but he be
came bright and wide-awake
and happy again.
Years ago, when I told Dr.
Clifford Sweet of Oakland
about the young people I
know who used to feel dull
and stupid on Monday be
cause of some unusual food
eaten on Sunday, he looked
through his large pediatric
practice and soon had gath
ered about him a "Dumb
Monday Club" of children
whose brain had been dulled
each Monday by some un
usual food ealen on Sunday.
Why Mother Gets Tired
Recently I pointed out in
this column that many of the
housewives who go to the doc
tor complaining of feeling
tired and weak, really have
just had too heavy a job.
They need rest, and rest
would probably cure them.
But the problem Is to get that

say in a recent article, often
what makes a mother's woyk
harder than necessary on her
is her tendency to keep con
stantly pushing herself, and
constantly feeling dissatisfied
because her house doesn't
look the way she would like
it to look; she is not satisfied
with what she is able to do.
As the Millers say, every
week the mother of three
children may wash 750 dishes
and 400 pieces of silver; she
may handle 250 articles of
laundry; make beds 35 times;
shop for, carry home, sort out,
store and cook 175 pounds of
food; and walk 35 miles
just around her kitchen. And
this is only a small part of
what is expected of her. If
she could do all this without
tension, and feeling of hurry
and dissatisfaction, it would
not tire her quite so much.
Work Without Tension
Some women work like
tills every day year in and
year out without seeming to
get tired. Probably they have
learned to do their work
without tensioa; perhaps they
have planned it well, and per
haps they have reserved some
time each day for resting, or
for sitting and reading, or
chatting with their husband
in the evening. Often they re
serve a bit of time just for
the enjoyment of much loved
children.
The Millers say they like
one of my pet stories. Many
years ago Steward Edward
White, the prominent out
doors-man, built himself a
cabin in the California Sier
ras. One day while he was
sawing frantically at a log,
the old rancher who was
watching him said, "You're
liKe all them city fellows.
When you are sawing you
can't wait to get that log
sawed in two. Now, when I
saws, I just saws." It is won
derful how much work one
can do comfortably and with
out strain if one will "just
saw." That is the way in
which each morning I tackle
my small mountain of mail,
and the lob of writing all
these comumns, plus editori
al? and booklets and books.

Winston Girl Hit
By Auto; Killed
Roscburg - IUPD - A 10-year-old
girl ran in front of a
speeding auto on a bridge just
west of Winston near here
Thursday and was killed.
State police here identified
the victim as Brenda Louise
Smith, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James E, Smith of Win
ston. The Smith family had
gone to Lookingglass creek on
an outing when the accident
occurred on Highway 42.
Driver of the car was
Barney Reece Porter, 22, Ten-
mile. It was Oregon's first
traffic fatality of June.
