One of the commonest com
plaints, especially of older
persons, is of head noises,
often with
dizziness, and
occasional 1 y
with nausea
and vomiting.
Usually the
first question
in the physi
cian's mind is,
are the noises
due to disease
in the ears or
are they arising in some area
of the brain injured by a
"little stroke?" If the person
is under 40 he is likely to
have ear trouble, but if he is
over 60 he is very likely to
nave arteriosclerosis in his
brain.
If. he has Meinere's disease,
which is due to an abnormal
ity in the lining of the bal
ancing mechanism in his in
ner ears, then, sooner or later,
he must have some loss of
hearing. If a man of 60 who
has had a bad dizzy spell and
now has ear noises is told by
a good and honest ear man
that his hearing is normal,
then he cannot have Meni
ere's disease, and there is no
sense In his traveling around
the country from one ear man
to another.
With the sudden spells of
Meniere's disease, a young
person will feel that he or the

ident Richard M. Nixon is
conceding in advance that he
will trail Gov. Edmund G.
Brown In the California pres
idential primaries June 7, ac
cording to his aides.
Nixon is unopposed in the
Republican primary in his
ftome state while Brown, a fa
vorite son candidate for Jhe
presidential nomination, hns
competition in the Democrat
ic primary. Brown's opponent
is George McLain, a promoter
of old age pension plans.
The Vice President was
said to feel that he would
poll fewer votes than Brown
because Democratic registra
tion in California exceeds that
of the GOP by a mnrgin of
about 3 to 2. Anather reason
was that the Democrats have
turned out a larger vote in
presidential primaries in re
cent election years in Call
'iornia. Truman Led Warren
President Franklin D.
Roosevelt led then Gov. Earl
Warren, running in their re
spective Democratic and Re
publican primaries in Cali
fornia, in 1S144. The same was
true in 1948 when President
Truman polled more votes
than Warren, and In 1952,
when Sen. Estcs Kefmiver
(D-Tenn.) ran ahead of War
ren. In 1958, the combined Dem
ocratic vote for Adlnl E.
Stevenson and Kefauvcr ex
ceeded the GOP vote for
President Eisenhower al
though Elsenhower polled a
larger vote than cither of the
two Democratic contenders.
Nixon was described as
very pleased with the vole he
has polled so far in slate pres
idential primaries. In each, he
has had no opposition or only
token competition.
In advance of both the Wis
consin and Indiana primaries,
Nixon conceded that he would
run behind Democratic con
tenders but In Indiana he out
polled Sen. John F. Kennedy
of Massachusetts. Each ot
tli em had minor opposition in
hii own primary In Indiana.

where he may vomit. The old
person who has had perhaps
one dizzy and woozy spell
usually will say that there
was no spinning around-only
a feeling of loss of the normal
good and comfortable sense of
balance. Often the doctor can
tell that the brain was injured
because, during the spell, the
man saw double, or for a few
hours an arm was numb and
clumsy, or for some weeks
afterward his memory was
poor, or he was irritable, iras
cible and unreasonable, and
perhaps unable to work.
Unfortunately, we doctors
haven't any very good treat
ment for either Meinere's dis-
sease or the little strokes. We
may give the patient unsalted
food, or we may give nicotinic
acid or histamine or anti-his-taminics,
but the results are
seldom spectacular. The pa
tient's greatest hope will be
that his disease will go away
by itself and leave him alone.

Nixon lieutenants said the
Vice President would be doing
well to poll one million votes
in California June 7 since
there is no GOP contest to
draw a vote. In 1956, how
ever, President Eisenhower
polled 1,354, 764 votes In the
California GOP primary with
no opposition, and Nixon's
primary voles this year usu
ally have compared well with
Eisenhower's 1956 showing.
The Vice president was said
to be hoping that the Cali
fornia Republican organiza
tion would work to turn out
a sizable vote for him.
Since he has no active rival
for the GOP Presidential
nomination, Nixon's declared
purpose in entering some of
the state primaries was to
stimulate pnrtjr organization
work in preparation for the
fall campaign.

Flood Control
Projects in 36
States Approved
Washington -WPD- The Sen
ate public works committee
has approved a bill authoriz
ing federal outlays totaling
$1,580,506,352 for 128 navi
gation, flood control and
other water development
projects in 36 states.
Amending a $647,776,000
authorization bill which
passed the House last July,
the Senate committee ap
proved all of the 50 projects
in that measure and added
78 more.
The bill would merly auth
orize the projects. Upon its
enactment backers of the
projects would have to per
suade Congress to vote the ac
tual money in a separate ap
propriations bill before con
struction work could begin.
Almost half the authoriza
tion approved by the Senate
committee s o m e $740 mil
lion was earmarked for con
tinuing work on four river
basin projects.
It would increase by that
amount previous authoriza
tions for work on comprehen
sive development of water
resources in the Arkansas ri
ver, Missouri river and Co
lumbia river basins and for
completion of Barkley dam
on the Lower Cumberland in
Kentucky. The house ap
proved $462 million for these
purposes.
The Senate version of the
rivers and harbors bill would
authorize funds for 65 naviga
tion, 37 flood control, 15 mul-tiDle-Durpose.

and 3 hurricane-flood control
projects.
In addition, tne Dill wouia
authorize surveys to deter
mine the feasibility of 16 ad
ditional navigation projects,
and 10 additional flood con
trol works. It authorized no
construction funds for these
projects.
