consideration.
The main thing Is that she
is a kid, just getting out of
high school. She doesn't know
anything about life. Right
now. the Idea of being mar
ried and having her own home
seems like the most romantic
thing in the world to her. But
she doesn't know the mean
ing of real work and respon
sibility. In a year or two
she'll be raising a family and
she'll wonder why her par
ents didn't warn her that mar
riage isn't one long picnic.
Why shouldn't Vivian en
joy a few more years of free
dom? If George loves her he II
wait. If not, she'll find anoth
er boy, just as good.

Tha Council: There has
been much controversy among
various experts In the fields
of human relations about the
desirability of early marri
ages. Those who are for it
point out the "steadying in
fluence" of marriage on both
young men and women.
No doubt many of these
pnrlv marriages work out wen
But the statisticians point out
thnt (he divorce rate for
brides under 20 is three times
the over-all average in me
rnillltrv. That is certninly
something to think about. It
must also be remembered
that for every couple whose
marriage founders completely,
there are many others whose
marriages verge on disaster
through many years.
It would be impossible ior
outsiders to judge how much
chance Vivian has of making
successful marriage, lhc
fact that she has found a high
ly desirable young man speaks
well for her, but it is oniy
a beginning. It is important
to consider her general ma-;
turity.
Few girls of 18 today are
well-prepared lo take on
homemaking and family-rearing
responsibility. They think
that modern conveniences
have taken nil the drudgery
out of homemaking and are
very much surprised when
they find more is involved in
the job than just taking food
out of the freezer. Most of
them are also totally unpre
pared for dealing with anoth
er individual s tastes and
habits. It rarely occurs to the
girl of 18 that her ardent sui
tor could ever become de
manding, morose, unyielding.
Vivian could be the excep
tion. She could have rare
common aense, a heavenly fi
position, a love of homemak
ing. In that ca.se, it would be
a shame to put a few more
years between her and great
happiness. But if she isn't that
exception, we think a one or
two year waiting period
would be all to her advant
