fact that he'd been checking
last year's race in addition to
the fact that Ford once again
looks like the Yankee "meal
ticket."
That the Yankees are, for
even though they're in fourth
place they're only two games
out of first and right behind
the tightly bunched Cleve
land Indians, Orioles and Chi
cago White Sox. And, with
Ford's three-hitter chasing all
worries that he might have a
sore arm, Stengel obviously
thinks the Yankees are ready
to make a strong move.
Indians Take First
The Indians were idle
Thursday night but moved
into first place, 12 percentage
points ahead of the Orioles.
The White Sox are third, a
half-game out of first place
after their 3-1 win over
Kansas City. The Washington
Senators whipped the Boston
Red Sox, 5-2, in the other
AL game.
The San Francisco Giants
increased their first - place
lead to a game and a half
when they walloped the
Philadelphia Phillies, 9-0, and
the Milwaukee Braves beat
the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-1,
in National league action.
Ford's down- breaking
curves had the Orioles hit
ting into the ground so much
that the Yankees totaled 22
assists - only six short of a
major league record.
Shaw Wins Fourth
Bob Shaw won his fourth
game for the White Sox with
the aid of Gerry Staley's 2
23 innings of shutout relief.
Batterymate Dick Brown hit
a two-run homer in the sec
ond inning and Minnie Mino
so tripled home a run in the

Plan Tourney
Savage Archers will be
hosts for their second annual
invitational field shoot on
Sunday, June 5.
All bowmen interested are
invited. Membership in an
archery club is not necessary.
The range is on Ashland
Mine rd. just north of Ash
land. Savage Archers will go to
Canyonville this week end to
compete in a 28-targct field
shoot.

Archers Trail shoot at Red-1
ding, Calif. Lucille Oetkens
was second in expert class,
Barbara Richardson first in
archer class and Bill Huff
man third in bowman class.
Twelve members of the
local club went south and
took their families. Fifty ani
mal targets were shot in
simulated hunting conditions.
