Lower Grade Paper

Mongolian Children Appear
Formed At Conception
A while ago, after 30 years
of studying mongolism in chil.
dren, and after reading most
of what has been written on
the subject in several lan
guages, I wrote in this column
that most experts agree that
the main cause is heredity.
By this, I did not mean more
mongoloids in the family -
although in a few families as
many as four mongoloids
have been reporled. I know of
one such family. In praclical-
ly all nf my series of cases
(here was some psychosis in
(he ances(ry.
Today, exper(s are finding
that some of the relatives of
mongoloids have strange
creases in their hands, and
others have strange abnor-1
mantles in th e I r blood.
Nowhere yet have I found a
s(udy of mongoloids in which
cood records were made of
the queer nervous abnormal
ities that showed up in the
relatives. Such studies must
now be made.
One factor that appears in
some cases is late child-bearing,
but it is silly to say that
the advanced age of the moth,
rr is the cause of mongolism.
Why Because one can find
plenty of mongloids who were
twins in which one is mon-
goloid, the other is no(. If the
womb were at fault, both
should be mongoloid. But
when one alike twin is mon
goloid, the other perhaps al
ways is. which fact points
very strongly to hereditary
disease.
Now. in the last year, ex-
Perts have found that the
1 reis in a mongoloid child's
over heredily) inslead of the '
normal 4(1. This indicates (ha(
a mongoloid is mongoloid I
from (he moment of concep
tion, and hence mothers of
such children must now stop i
feeling guilty: there is noth-
inc thai they did that could
have had any influence in pro
ducing the abnomal child.
