Bodies May Have
To Be Altered '
For Space Travel i
San Antonio, Tex. - (LTD - ,
Two scientists think the bod- i
jps of men may have to be '
altered chemically and elec-1
tronically to enable them to i
travel through the bleakness ;
and perils o outer space to
other planets.
The scientists are Dr. Na
than S. Kline and Dr. Man
fred E. Clynes of the Rock
land State Hospital Research
Facility at Orangeburg, N.Y.
They will present a paper
on "drugs, space and cyberne
tics" next Friday at a sym
posium on the psychophysical
aspects of space flight, which
the Air Force will sponsor at
its school of aviation medi
cine. Portions of their paper were
released tonight. The altered
human beings they think may
be necessary for space flights
would be called "cybergs."
For Comfortable Living
Their paper points out that
man is made for comfortable
living in an earthly environ
ment. A cyberg could be
scientifically adapted to the
environment of outer space.
A cyberg would have no
problem of oxygen regener
ation in his space cabin, since
he would not have to breathe, j
A "lung" powered by a solar :
battery and attached to his !
arteries would remove carbon
dioxide from his blood and
replace It with oxygen. ,
Kline and Clynes said the
rose osmotic pump inserted
in the cyberg's body might be;
used to cause near hiberna
tion and permit him to toler
ate the long, tedious journeys
to other planets. It is expect- '
ed, for instance, that it will
take about 250 days to reach
Mars.
Heated Electronically
Other drugs could be used
to keep the cyberg's brain ac-'.
tive, or it could be neated
electronically so that it would
maintain its full functions.
The cyberg, according to
Kline and Clynes, might not
have to worry about food. It
is theoretically possible to
process urine and pass the
nutrients in it back into his
blood stream, thus preserving
his fluid balance.
Since the cyberg would be
fed through his veins, body
waste would be almost no
thing and the carbon dioxide
in these could be fed into a
fuel cell and converted into
oxygen.
If a cyberg's body functions
can thus be changed, Kline
and Clynes think he almost
might be made artificially
happy. The pleasure centers
of his brain might be electric
ally stimulated at intervals.
Detector Would Signal
A radiation detector would
signal when a servomechan
ism could give him drugs to
reduce the deadly effects of
radiation belts that surround
the earth.
If the cyborg were not al
ready ready for long periods
of hibernation, he could be
nut tn clppn hv rfni fir an '
electrical device.
Kline and Clynes said they
already have experimented
with a Russian device, the
electroson, which can induce
sleep and produce wakeful
ness. They think this instrument
will prove valua' to the
astronaut during the tremen
dous stresses that are pro
duced upon his body by a I
rocket's blastoff.
Kline and Clynes think the
cyberg idea might also be
adapted to the conquest of
mental and other diseases.
Kansas Coeds Nix
Kissing Contest
Lawrence, aKn.-HJPD-Coeds
at Kansas university rejected
a kissing contest proposed by
Sigma Chi fraternity. Repre
sentatives of all the sororities
here called the contest "in
poor taste."
The contest would have
had five judges, .all blindfold
ed with hands tied behind
their backs. The contestants
would walk by and "plant" a
kiss on each judge. The
judges would rate each con
testant from one to five
points, the woman with the
highest point total would win.
But the fraternity dropped
the contest from its annual
Derby Day.
"Who'd want to win it any
way?" a co-ed asked indig
nantly. Man With Cold ,
Took Wrong Pills
Dps Monies. Ia.-Bob Harritt
reached for his bottle of cold
pills and hoped he could ob
tain enough relief to get a
good night's sleep.
At 4 a.m. he was still wide
awake and sniffling.
Harritt decided to check the
label on the bottle. He dis-
covered that he had been
swallowing his wife's reducing :
pills.
