My husband is
Daniel A. - People bore me.
Mary A. - My husband and
I are in our early twenties
and have been married a
year. I hate to admit it, but
I find marriage very disap
pointing. The main trouble Is that I
would like to have some social
life, and Dan Just doesn't
care for any. I have been lone
ly all my life and 1 have al
ways wanted friends. I
thought things would change
for me after I got married,
but they haven't. Dan is satis
fied to sit home and watch
TV every evening.
A couple of times I invited
people from the office over
to the house, but they
never invited us back. I think
the reason for that is Dan's
silence. He hardly said a word
the whole time they were
with us. I kept the conversa
tion going as well as I could,
but everyone was uncomfort
able. Daniel A.-Can I help it if
people bore me? I've always I
been that way. When I'm by
myself 1 can have a pretty
good time, but put me with
a lot of people and I'm bored
to death.
The people Mary Invited to
our house were the dumbest
and silliest I've ever met.
They asked stupid questions
about our house and what I
do on my job. You'd think
they'd just come over on some
immigrant ship.
If Mary ever expected me
to run around socially she
made a big mistake. We met
in a library on Saturday
night, Neither of us had any
place to go. That's the way
it always was with me and
I'm not sorry because people
are a waste of time. I'm be
ginning to wonder whether
Mary married me for myself
or the friends she thought I
had.
e
The Council: Continual
boredom is a defense.
There are enough people
and things in the world for
everyone to find something
he can enjoy. Highly intelli
gent persons are rarely bored
because their alert minds will
uncover the exciting or inter
esting element in the least
promising situations and indi
viduals. It is believed that many
individuals try to hide their
fear and hostility toward oth
ers behind a mask of boredom.
They will not come out open
ly and argue points they may
disagree with and they will
not admit to themselves that
another person makes them
feel inferior or worthless. But
they can say they are bored.
This gives them a sense of
superiority.
Despite the lonely life she
has lived in the past, Mary
has taken several big steps
forward. The mere fact that
she was able to find a man
and marry despite her lack
of social contacts speaks well
for her. Now she wants to
expand her life further and
has taken steps toward that
end.
Although things would be
far easier and far more pleas
ant for her if she had her
husband's, full cooperation,
she shouldn't let his negative
attitude overwhelm her. She
should go on making friends
wherever she can and should
try to learn from popular
women among those she
meets. If she can become a
gay, interesting person, she
will be accepted in spite of
a morose husband. Or, possi
bly, Dan will suddenly wake
