Christian faith at a leading
seminary. j
But he had to go to a men
tal hospital to learn the realj
meaning of those doctrines
and their relevance to the :
deepest needs of troubled hu- j
man beings.

"They have helped me to
see the profound validity of
what the Scriptures say about
man's condition. And they
have shown me what Jesus
meant when he said: -Ye shall
know the truth and the truth
shall make you free.' "
Chaplain Bruder has minis
tered to deeply disturbed peo
ple for 20 years. Like most
outsiders, he went to the men
tal hospital expecting to find
its patients bizarrely "differ
ent." But he quickly learned
that they are "just like the
rest of us-only more so."
Experience Acute Loneliness
"These men and women," he
explained, "are simply experi
encing, in acute and greatly
magnified form, the loneliness
and suflering and sorrow and
despair which are the common
lot of human existence."
Chaplain Bruder said he
now realizes that "Jesus was
not talking about some ab
stract concept" when He said
the truth would make men
free.
"The truth that makes men
free is the knowledge that
God is the father of us all-no
matter where we are, who we
are, what -e cue, oi what we
have been. It is the assurance
that even though we reject
Him to the uttermost, we can
never alienate His love, His
concern or His compassion.
He will always be waiting,
like the father of the prodigal
son, with his arms outstretch
ed, for us to come home and
be reconciled to Him."
Chaplain Bruder has also
learned that this liberating
truth cannot be conveyed to a
troubled person (in or out of a
mental hospital) by words
alone. No one can begin to
comprehend the love and for
giveness of God until he has
experienced in some degree
the same qualities in a human
relationship.
Gets New Insight
This has given him new in
sight into the doctrine of the
Incarnation, and the nature of
Christian fellowship.
The mission of this Chris
tian fellowship becomes crys
tal clear in a mental hospital,
Chaplain Bruder said. It is to
serve as a "healing commu
nity" - a place where troubled
men can encounted, in actual
human relationships, the com
passionate and restoring spirit
of God.
"I have seen it work here,"
he said quietly. "I have seen
it set men free from the most
awful bondage. If it can get
through here, where the bar
riers are so tragically high
and wide, it can get through
anywhere.
"That is what the patients
have taught me."

Little Boy
Mary had a little boy, Hi soul
was. white as snow.
Yet, he never went to church
'cause Mary wouldn't go.
He never heard the tales of
Christ, that thrill the childish
mind; While other children
went to church, this child was
left behind.
And as he grew from babe to
youth, she saw to her dismay;
A soul that once was snowy
white, become a dingy gray.
Realizing he was lobt, she tried
to win htm back: But now the
soul that once was white had
turned an ugly black.
She even started back to
church, and was quite faithful,
too.
She begged the preacher, "Isn't
there a thing that you can do?'
The preacher tried, and failed
and said, "We're ust too far
behind.
I tried to tell you years ago,
but vcu would pay no mind.
And so, another soul is lost, that
once as white as snow.
