Missing in Cuba
Havans-dTH-Capt. Herman
Marks, of Milwaukee, who
commanded Xiiing tU&ds for
Premier Fidel Castro, has
been missing since Saturday
on a "fishing trip" with four
other Americans, It was re
ported today.
Unconfirmed reports said
th five, who left the Isle of
Fines off Cuba's south coast
in a sportsfishing boat, were
fleeing to Mexico.
Marks' companions includ
ed an American woman, ten
tatively identified as free
lance newswoman Julia
Secon.
Friends of Miss Secon said
they doubted that she was in
the Marks party. They said
the left Havana Wednesday,
presumably on the way to
the United States for a vaca
tion. Marks joined Castro's rebel
forces in the hills of eastern
Cuba and stayed on in this
country after they triumphed
over President Fulgencio Ba
tista. He commanded firing
. squads for Castro during the
purge that brought death to
more than 600 Cubans.
Nuclear Policy
Group Sets Rally
New York -UPD- Thousands
of persons are expected to
attend a rally sponsored by
'The Committees for a Sane
Nuclear Policy" at Madison
Square Garden tonight.
The rally will mark the
first large-scale disarmament
gathering in the United
States.
Speakers will include Alf
M. Landon, former governor
of Kansas and the 1936 Repub
lican presidential candidate.
Walter P. Reuther, president
of the United Auto Workers;
Gov. G. Mennen Williams of
Michigan; Norman Thomas,
author and lecturer, and Dr.
Israel Goldstein, honorary
president of the American
Jewish Congress.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt of
the American Association for
tile United Nations and Dr.
Harold Taylor, educator and
former president of Sarah
Lawrence College will be
cochairman of the meeting.
Sponsors of the rally esti-

Ships Collide
In North Sea
Ijmuiden, Holland -IUPD-Two
ships collided in the
North Sea today forcing 44
persons, including two wom
en, to take to life boats in
thick fog. All were rescued.
A total of three life boats
were launched, two from the
badly damaged Swedish
freighter Mongabara and one
from the British tanker Work
man. A boat containing the two
women and 16 Swedish sail
ors, dressed only in their
night clothing, was found
almost 'immediately. The two
other emergency craft, with
a total of 26 seamen aboard,
drifted for several hours in
fog and darkness before be
ing taken in tow.
The collision occurred 12
miles from Borkum Island, off
the German coast. The captain
of the 5,029 ton Mongabara
gave the abandon ship order
but remained aboard, along
with his first mate, in an ef
fort to save his ship.
The women were the wife
of Mongabara's second engi
neer and the daughter of the
first engineer.
Fisherman Found
Dead in Boat
Tillamook-ilTD-A 59-year-old
Florence, Ore., commercial
fisherman was found dead
aboard his beached 38-foot
fishing boat here Wednesday.
The man was identified as
Walter Kuck. The boat was
the Arlene K.
The coroner's office said the
man was dead at least 24
hours but could give no rea
son for death. An autopsy will
be performed.
The coroner said Kuck ap
parently became entangled in
the line that brings in his
power driven fishing appa
ratus. Coast Guard authorities left
the body on board the Arlene
K. while they brought the
boat back to Garibaldi. But
the ship sank inside Tilla
mook Bay and a skin diver
had to be called to get the
borly.
The boat was first sighted
by Tillamook citizens who
' said the boat was running in
circles.
Kuck left Sunday (Burning
on a fishing trip.
