Highway Fatalities

Hollywood, Calif., discussed

ion specialist in helping to
reduce the toll of highway fa
talities at a postgraduate
study conference here re
cently. Optometrists from Grants
Pass, Medford. Ashland and
Yreka attended. The confer
ence was held under the aus
pices of the Optometric Ex
tension program, a non profit
and international foundation
dedicated to education and re
search In vision.
Dr. Richardson said optom
etrists "must impress upon
our patients that the most im
portant safety feature a car
has is its driver, and that vi
sion is the most important
physical faculty in driving.

ing daylight hours. The dif
ference, he said, between day
and night is illumination,

tant to highway safety in
clude ability to .indue depth
accurately, wide fields of vi
sion on both sides, ability to
see well in dim light, recov
ery of normal sight quickly
after exposure to glare of
headlights, and the ability to
quickly and accurately change
the fixation of eyes.
Tinted Glasses
Dr. Richardson noted that
drivers should not wear tint
ed glasses at night, and added
that some dark-tinted wind
shields eliminate a consider
able amount of light.
He said that clear glass
"cuts about 12 per cent of
light by reflection and absorp
tion. Additional cutting dan
gerously deduces visibility."

George A. Goodman, a
freshman at the medical
school, received a James P.
Griffith Scholarship, a cash
award from a fund establish
ed in 1959 by Mrs. James P.
Griffith in memory of her hus
band. Awards are made to
worthy and promising medi
cal students on the basis of
need and scholastic attainment.
Goodman is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. George W. Good

was graduated from Medford
High school, and attended
Oregon State college and
Southern Oregon college.

Tuesday afternoon in a log
truck accident.
Police said Henry appar
ently had stopped the truck
on a down-grade to inspect air
brake lines when the brakes
gave way. He was crushed be
neath the trailer wheels.

Eugene - Major trends in
South Asia will be the subject
of one of the seminars of the
University of Oregon's Sum
mer World Affairs program
The program will be held on
the campus during June 20 to
July 15.
Dr. Leo E. Rose of the In
stitute of South Asian Studies
at the University of Californi;
will discuss major problems
and trends in India, Pakistan,
Nepal, and Ceylon, with em'
phasis on economic, social and
political development of the
area.
Dr. Rose has studied the
Asian scene for many years.
He has worked in the Far
East, in India, and Nepal for
several years. He has con
tributed significantly to the
studies of government and
politics of India and Nepal
and has written articles for
the Encyclopedia Americana
on Far Eastern countries.
