Incident Ill-Timed,
Knowland Declares
Oakland, Calif. - (UPD - Wil.
liam F. Knowland, former
GOP leader in the Senate
and now assistant publisher
of the Oakland Tribune, said
the spy plane incident on the
eve of the summit conference
was ill-timed.
"However, a diplomatic
conference is no guarantee of
peace or the protection of the
free world from a potential
aggressor," he said.
Knowland said that at the
time of Pearl Harbor "we
would have been far better
off" if American planes had
been over Japanese waters ob
serving the Japanese fleet's
movements - instead of de
pending "on the smiles of her
diplomats" in Washington.

AMA President
Raps Medical Aid
New York-WPD-Dr. Louis M.
Orr, president of the Ameri
can Medical Association, said
Monday if Congress passes a
medical aid bill for the elder
ly, the nation's hospitals will
be jammed with persons who
don't need hospital care.
Orr addressed the Medical
Society of the State of New
York which passed a resolu
tion urging Congress to take
no action on health care bills
until the problem has been
studied thoroughly.
'Much of the nation now
suffers from lack of sufficient
hospital facilities to care for
the critically ill of all ages,"
Orr said. "Sending millions
of ciders with minor ailments
to hospitals will turn a serious
situation into a chaotic one
across the nation."
Orr, who opposes both the.
Forand medical aid bill and
the administration's aid bill,
said "catastrophic or terminal
illness" affects only a small
minority of the aged, and
these cases are generally bet
ter treated In nursing homes.
