Corregidor, Philippines -(LTD
The "Rock" has fallen
upon bad days.
This great symbol of Amer
ican and Filipino courage and
preserverance is crumbling in
to ruins, forgotten by all but
the few remaining men who
helped defend it.
It is a neglected shambles
of weeds, rust - and ghostly
memories.
Eighteen years ago - on
May 7, 1942 - Gen. Johnathan
Wainwright surrendered Cor
regidor to the Imperial Jap
anese army, which had
crushed the defenders of Ba
taan barely a month before.
Today, the great guns point
silently toward the South
China sea. The shells remain
neatly stacked and unfired.
For, as was the tragic case at
Singapore, they were em
placed to shoot in only one di
rection - to the sea. The Jap
anese came from the rear, on
Bataan, and Corregidor's "im
pregnable" guns were help
less. Small Detachment
There is a small detachment
of the Philippines navy on
Corregidor today. Its members
live with their families in a
little village near the old
stone wharfs and guide an
occasional visitor through the
giant underground tunnels in
which hundreds of thdusands
of artillery shells are stored.
At the highest point on the
fortress island, a lighthouse
serves to guide ships into
Manila bay.
Below, overgrown by the
jungle, are the rows of gutted
barracks left, more or less, as
they were those 18 years ago.
Fats nest in. smashed G.I.
footlockers. Lizards scurry
over rusted steel helmets.
It is as if the battlefield was
frozen into sudden silence a
decade ago and the world
locked out.
Gen. Douglas MacArthur's
hillside headquarters (he later
moved into the tunnels beloW)
still stands intact, a few scraps
of faded paper fluttering on
the bulletin board.
The once carefully mowed
parade fields are waist high in
weeds. Scattered about are
parts of weapons, smashed
helmets.
There are many shallow
graves. There are many hu
man bones.
Atop a small pole, near the
deserted tunnels, is a sun
bleached skull of some forgot
ten soldier - an American, Fil
ipino, or Japanese? No one
knows. It stares starkly at the
silent sea.
Deep in the moulding tun
nels, on the walls of what
once were the hospital wards,
are written farewell messages
scrawled on the stone with
pencils or chalk and, appar
ently in some cases, with
blood. They are signed by men
from West Virginia and New
Jersey and little villages
throughout the Philippines.
These were the immortal
Filipino scouts and the Na
tional Guardsmen and the
regular army, who made the
last stand.
Patlerned Wool
Slacks Making
News for Spring
What's new in lightweight
wool slacks this Spring? Pat
terned wool slacks, for one
thing, are now making news.
They're a bright addition to
every man's wardrobe, and
they go nicely with sports
coats.
You'll find patterns galore.
Houndstooth checks, stripes,
glen plaids, district check
flannels. You can chose be
tween bold and muted pat
terns. You'll see them in conserv
ative Ivy styling, which Is cor
rect for young, slim men in
the 18 to 30 bracket, and for
family men there is the smart
Continental styling. Regard
less of age, you'll find a style
that looks best for you.
Ivy slacks this season are
cut more trim and tapered
than last year. Pleatless,
they're worn cuffed.
Comfortable-Fitting
Continental wool slacks in
8 ounce tropical weights spurt
new angle to last year's front
pocket - and a button! The
Continental's single pleat
trousers offer a more flatter
ing look for mature men. Men
slightly on the portly side will
find single pleat wool worsted
slacks give them an air of
slimness.
Since Continental slacks
also come beltless, active men
will find them more comfortable-fitting
around the waist
line. Side tabs are adjustable,
will keep slacks up, neat look
ing. Cuffs are recommended.
And, be sure to look for that
new label informing you of
"permanent creases." This
will mean less pressing bills
for you, and here's why: This
new process permanently im
pregnates crease into wool. It
works like a home permanent.
Wol trousers with this pro
cess retain their press even
after a drenching April show
er. You'll find "permanent
crease" labels in many well
known brands, and in all
styles-Ivy, Continental, Western.
There has been talk, and
reports, for several years
about plans to build a great
memorial here to these men.
Two years ago, in Washing
ton, a bill was passed in Con
gress authorizing $7,500,000
for this purpose. The Senate,
however, failed to act on it
and the bill has been re-introduced
in the current Congress.
Emmet O'Neal, chairman of
the Corregidor-Bataan memor
ial commission, has asked con
gress for $398,000 to keep the
commission alive for another
year in hopes the Corregidor
memorial will be authorized
by then.
Plans Not Pushed
Filipino leaders - and Cor
regidor is now part of the
Philppines republic - are not
pushing the memorial plans.
Several weeks ago, a group of
leaders, including military
representatives, loured "the
Rock." Their main interests
however, were proposals to
develop Corregidor as a
money-making tourist attrac
tion.
"The Rock" is only 22 miles
from Manila and is a pleasant
two-hour boat ride. But,
far, no regular scheduled ferry
service is available. Written
permission is required from
the Philippines Navy and
guards will fire warning shots
at uninvited intruders
This is the result, in part,
o periodic raids made on
Corregidor by scrap metal
scavengers. They have, over
the years, stripped "The
Rock" of many of its price
less relics.
Periodically a minor scan
dal blows up in Manila news
papers after bands of looters
and thieves make off with
metal and explosives.
Then, it is generally forgotten.
