A Catholic leader calls it
"the most arresting Christian
phenomenon of our time."
A Prptestant scholar says
II is --me most sigmucaru
change that has come in the
religious life of our genera
tion."
They are referring to a
great arousal of laymen.
No one can say exactly
when or where or why it
started. But you can see it
happening in every denomina
tion.
Ordinary Christian men
and women are waking up to
the fact that they have a job
to do. It is a job they have
little understood and largely
neglected in the past. It' is
more difficult and more im
portant than the traditional
kind of 'layman's work"
which consisted of helping the
professional clergy attend to
the institutional chores of the
church.
' Has Two Dimensions
What is this much-discussed
"ministry of the laity?'" Pro
testant and Catholic writers,
who have turned out scores
of books on the subject late
ly, agree that it has two di
mensions. First, they say, every lay
man is called upon to help
communicate the good news
of Christ to those who have
not heard or understood it.
The commandment to preach
the Gospel to "every living
creature" was not directed
solely at ordained clergymen:
It was laid upon the whole
church. And laymen consti
tute more than 90 per cent of
the manpower of the church.
In their everyday business,
professional and social con
tacts, they can reach out to
people who will never hear
the church's message in any
other way.
Second, laymen have a
unique opportunity to help
Christianize the social order
of which they are a part. They
can do this by taking their
faith to work with them-by
acting like Christians in the
decisions they make as busi
nessmen, union officials, poli
ticians, diplomats, television
broadcasters, newspaper re
porters or so on.
Consecration of World
The late Pope Pius XII
called this task "the conse
cration of (he world," and
pointed out that only laymen
can periorm It. The World
Council of Churches express
ed the same thought in these
words:
"The real battles of the
faith today are being fought
in factories, shops, offices and
farms, in political parties and
government agencies, in count
less homes, in the relationship
of nations. Very often it is
said that the church should
'go into these spheres'; but
the fact is that the church is
already in these spheres in
the persons of its laity."

The Alternatives
TWO DOCTORS stand over a
dying man's bed. Each wants
the same fee. One says, "Let
me treat you and you will sure
ly die." The other says, "Let
me treat you and you will live."
The dying man doesn't know
whether the second doctor can
save him or not but at least
he offers hope. The first of
fered nothing but a price for
his useless service. Which doc
tor would you use?
JESUS AND THE WORLD both
come asking for your soi'l. In
that sense they both want the
sanw thing. Jesus savs, "Trust
me, obey me, and live." The
world says, "Invest yourself in
me and die." You must take
one or the other. You cannot
split your investment. You can
not have both. Which will the
wise man choose? . . .
