a term that
got its start back in the 15th
and 16th centuries when
Spain, England, and France
were exploring and colonizing
the new world.
Factoring in recent years
has been held mostly to the
textile industry. Now it has
spread out to 40 or so differ
ent industries, including boots
and shoes, furniture, draper
ies, lamps and home furnish
ings, kitchen utensils, plastics,
hardware, fertilizer, toys,
paints, sporting goods, and
garden tools, also stereophon
ic hi-fi sets and aluminum
screens and storm windows.
Handle Many Chores
Current annual volume of
factoring is more than $5 bil
lion. Back in 1944 it was
only $1.5 billion. And, ac
cording to Walter M. Kelly,
president of Commercial Fac-J
tors Corp., it is growing rapid
ly. Factors handle such chores
for small business as new
product development, packag
ing, advertising, market re
search, credit investigation,
and the financing of the day-to-day
operations of business.

bookkeeping, it is

Business failures still are a
big item in the economy. In
the first quarter, according to
Dun it Bradstreet, there were
3,730 failures with liabilities
of $84,800,000. In the corres
ponding period of 1959, they
totaled 3.697 with liabilities
of $197,200,000.
