market, which Iirs a tendency
to do what isn't expected,
could turn up
sh o r t ly and
make a good
showing for
May.
The month
of May isn't
one that hat
shown definite
trends over
the years. It'a
Elr Waller just about a
stand-off in gains and losses.
Those who hold there is a
prospect of a recovery move
ment point to the consistent
perverscness of the market so
far this year.
Reversed Trend
According to past history,
the market rises in January.
This January it had It widest
drop in history save for that
dread October of 1929.
February usually is a month
of decline. This year the mar
ket rose a bit in the second
month.
March, when a rise is in or
der, witnessed a decline. April
with a slight edge on gains
over the years saw a further
decline.
May and June are the stand
off months, and often they
form.the base for the market's
traditional summer rally.
Declines ill the market have
hurt many people it is noted
and hence there could well be
stiff resistance to a market
rise at this time.
But. the expert! point out
that the market has several
things in its favor.
Trading has been very light.
Only a little more than four
per cent of the stock listed
has been traded to far this
year which meant no rush to
sell that marked the 1029
catastrophe.
Secondly, prices have been
driven down to levels where
in the not distant past many
traders were lured from the
sidelines to make purchases
which helped sustain the mar
ket. In the third place, it is held
that business has ignored the
market decline that is prepar
ing to spend vast sums for
new construction and rehabili
tation of plants.
S. B. Lurie, research expert
for the brokerage firm of
Josephthal & Co., notes that
the readjustment In business
taking place may stem primar
ily from an excessive build-up
following settlement of the
steel strike and unprecedently
unfavorable weather in late
winter.
"Today't head lines," he
says, "may reflect no more
than a compressed or concen
trated rolling readjustment.
"If this is true, it almost
automatically follows that
pait maladjustments are being
corrected before they become
a major or long-lasting depressant.
"Thus, there's at least the
hope if not the promise of
better business in the second
half of the year.
"After all. consumer spend
ing - the dominant force in
the economy - is high. Retail
sales, and this means auto
mobile sales too, are good.
"Moreover, there is a sub
stantial backlog of capital
appropriations o be trans
lated into actual orders.
The business fundamentals
may well be better than specu
lative psychology."
Lurie doesn't look for a
market boom. He believes that
once there is more vitality in
the general business trend,
the best market gains will
center on the leading issues -and
not the special dynamics.
