GIVING BABIES AWAY!

Everyone has heard about the vicious
black market in baby adoptions, where
human lives are bartered for prices ranging
up to $10,000 and higher. Far less is known
about the gray market, which is 10 times
more widespread and just as potentially
devastating to the lives of those involved.
What is this gray market? Here is an
example:
In the Midwest, a 35-year-old woman,
childless since her marriage IS years before,
adopted a little girl of 18 months who had
been orphaned. The adoption was arranged
by a family doctor without the help of any
recognized agency.
The physician knew how much the
woman longed for a child of her own.
But he also knew she was suffering from
a type of cancer which would be fatal
in a few years! With the best intentions,
he wanted to bring a little happiness into
the life left to her. But soon after the baby
was surrendered to his patient, she grew

worse and was unable to enjoy the young
ster, much less care for her.
Recently, the woman died, and her hus
band, his money drained by her long
illness, is now left with a completely de
pendent four-year-old girl.
This is just one of the pathetic conse
quences of the gray-market adoption prob
lem which is reaching alarming proportions
in the U. S. Last year, nearly 20,000 infants
and young children were given auay in a
similarly casual, unplanned, ineipert man
ner. These were children who were aban
doned, born out of wedlock, or innocent
victims of divorce and separation.
Gray-market adoptions are "under-the-
counter" placements of babies and young
children private deals worked out by go
bet veens. who may include friends, rela
tives, doctors, lawyers, clergymen. There
is no question of willful wrongdoing, and
certainly nobody profits from them finan
cially as in black-market transactions.
