The Family Council

Each artlclo Is a summary of an actual .-at history The Council reports
en problems that hava been dealt wl et by responsible agencies and
counselors.
Mrs. M. R. - She wants to
live with Fred.
Ada R, - My friends give
me credit for courage,
e e
Mrs. M. H. - Our lfl year
old daughter, Ada, is a talent
ed and pretty giri and my hus
band and I had high hopes for
her until a few months aEo
when she took up with an ir
responsible man of 24.
We soon realized that they
were involved in an affair
and we found ourselves un
able to do anything about It.
We were heartbroken, but we
hoped that the thing would
die a natural death or they'd
soon marry.
We had hoped Ada would
make a better marriage, but
finally we were forced to
urge her to marry Fred rather
than have the illicit affair.
Then she told us that Fred is
married and his wife refuses
to cooperate in getting a di
vorce. Now she says she
wants to live with him and
we haven't been able to talk
her out of this crazy idea.
e
Ada R. - Regardless of what
my parents think, Fred isn't
irresponsibie. He got involved
in a ridiculous marriage at
the age of 19 and his wife Is
a spiteful person who just
wants to make things rough
for him.
Fred and I are very much
in love and want to marry.
Fred has learned a lot from
his past mistake and is ready
now to make a good marriage.
We don't care about conven
tion and feel that we can
sending letters to both com
panies thanking tnese men
and the management for the
courtesy shown to the Sams
Valley students.
Trips to the Jeddeloh Mill
at Gold Hill and Ross Lumber
comptny at Camp White are
planned for the first week in
May.
The eighth grade pupils are
studying United States court
systems and cases. For this
reason, Russell Carr's room
is planning to go to the Med
ford library and the Jackson
county courthouse to watch a
trial session or to go through
the court section of the building.
During the week of April
IB through the 22 a put-on
crime and trial took place at
the achool
wife is ready to give him
divorce. Eventually she'll
want to marry herself and
then she'll be ready to give
him a divorce. But that could
take years. In the meantime
we want to be happy.
I realize my parents can't
be very happy about this situ
ation, but my friends give me
credit for my courage. Some
times you must sacrifice to do
as your heart dictates.
The Councili It would be
pointless to argue the legal
and moral aspect of this case
with a girl who has the poor
Judgment to be interested in
neither.
Ada claims, however, to be
Interested in "happiness," by
which we presume she means
emotional happiness. The fact
is that she cannot have even
this under the present setup.
Whether we like It or not,
we are all bound in great
measure to the society around
us. By her own admission,
Ada is now getting some satis
faction out of being consider
ed courageous by her
"friends." She has built up a
romantic picture of herself in
which she plays the heroine.
However, if she goes
through with her plan of
openly living with Fred in an
illicit union, she will soon
find that she has been tripped
up by her role. Many of her
friends will marry, start rais
ing families and shun her.
Others will simply accept her
situation and forget about the
fact that there has been no
marriage. The more thought
ful ones will feel sorry for
her.
In the meantime Ada will
be living with her great love
on an ordinary day-to-day
level, subject to all the pres
sures of married life. There
will be squabbles and bore
dom, but never the comfort
and spiritual lift of knowing
that she and Fred are united
in a mutual devotion so strong
that it must demand recogni
tion from the world around
them.
No responsible man would
put a woman he loves through
such an ugly ordeal. We are
afraid that Ada has gone be
yond her depth in this af
fair and longs to be pulled
safely out, no matter how
much she protests, nut oniy
she can save herself - by run
ning away from Fred - fast
and far.
