Invasion of Building Industry By 'Foaming Plastics' Predicted

New York -ft'PD- One of the
mushrooming industries of
tomorrow is likely to be
"foaming plasties."
Foaming plastics, already
are out of the Infant itige.
They are competing lustily
with rubber, lumber, cork,
concrete fibreglass and some
plastics in the packaging,
boating, chemical, aircraft,
toy and many other indus
tries. Tomorrow, they may in
vade building on such a big
scale as to compel a change in
our whole conception of how
house should be built. The
biggest change li that foaming
plastics may make homes
portable. That is, it will be
possible to take them apart
and take them along with you
If you move without much
more consideration for ex
pense than moving your fur
niture. Can Be Sawsd, Nailed
Foaming plastics can be
bought already made and can
be sawed, nailed and drilled
like lumber and will bond to
each other like molten metals
very easily. They are very
strong, yet extremely light
and totally waterproof and
highly fire resistant.
For small jobs such as pro
viding flotation buoyance for
a boat, or filling up cavities in
any kind of construction, you
can buy the chemicals in cans,
pour them into the cavities
and they will foam up in a
few minutes, filling the space
and hardening Into a strong
lightweight solid.
Portable Homes
Engineers already have
worked out designs and actu
ally built some portable
homes of sandwich materials
made of foaming plastics.
Some lightweight industrial
buildings have been put up
using the material. The big
block to rapid expansion of
use of foaming plastics in
building is that at present they
are quite expensive. But that
could change drastically in a
few years.
President Joseph A. Graiier
of American Standard, a lead
ing maker of plumbing equip
ment, recently told the Na
tional Construction Industry
Conference that the housing
Industry can't achieve stabil
ity until builders and mort
gage lenders make more ef
fort to catch up with engi
neering and architectural ad
vances in home building.
Some builders are trying to
catch up. President Josenh
Caplan of Shelley Co. of Los
Angoles is making foamed
plastic wall panels surfaced on
tha outside with metal or as
bestos shingle and on the in
side with polyster film.
The foanu'd material may
be a urelhane compound or
polystyrene. When it hardens,
it is so light two men handle
a four-foot by 12-foot' panel
three Inches thick - yet the
panel will have the strength
of bearing wnU and will sup
port floor beams without
studs.
Such panels can be clipped
together weather-tight. Previ
ous efforts to make sandwich
wall panels with cellulose
centers not only lacked bear
ing strength but were ex
tremely difficult to make
weather-tight.
Plumbing and electric lines
can be built into the wall pan
els so they connect up with
little installation work.
Light But Strong
Koppers Co. is planning to
make plywood panels with a
foamed polystyrene core in its
Detroit plant for both home
and commercial building use
in thicknesses ranging from
three to 13 inches, all with
bearing wall strength and

sheet on top of the sand.
Around the edges of the
house, grade beams-blocks of
pre-stressed concrete-are laid
in trenches down to frost line.
Any type of flooring can be
installed over the foundation
panels.
Movable root beams and
panels and portable window
and door sections are no big
engineering or architectural
problem. They have been In
use In factories and tempor
ary housing projects for years.
Delay in Hoffa

has disqualified himself

Hoffa but his replacement im
mediately turned down a
move for further postpone
ment of the ease.
Judge Joseph R. Jackson, a
retired member of the Court
of Customs and Patent Ap
peals, took over for Letts, lis
tened to arguments on behalf
of Hoffa that the trial be de
layed, then ruled: "Motion
denied."
Jackson, who has the repu
tation for running a "no-non
sense" court, said he would
hear arguments Thursday on
another move by Hoffa a at
torneys that the trial be can
celled outright,
