A copyrighted article in
Parade magazine credited this
account of Miss Earhart's
death to Josephine Blanco
Akiyama, a native of Saipan,
who was 7 In 1937 when. Miss
Earhart disappeared while on
a world flight with Freed
Noonan. Mrs. Akiyama now
lives in California.
Mrs. Akiyama says, accord
ing to Parade, that she was
riding a bicycle toward the
Japanese military area on
Tanapg harbor in the sum
mer of 1937, when a twin
engined silver plane crash
landed in the harbor.
Hushed to Scent
She said she and her broth
eiMiilaw, J. Y. Matsumoto, a
Japanese, rushed to the scene
to see what had happened.
They found an American wo
man, dressed in a man's shirt
and trousers and with a man's
haircut. With her was a man
dressed in a short-sleeved
shirt.
The man and woman were
led away by Japanese sol
diers, Mrs. Akiyama report
ed, and taken into a clearing
in a woods. She 'said shots
later rang out and the sol
diers returned alone.
According to Parade, Mrs.
Akiyama has affirmed after
looking at photographs of
Miss Earhart and Noonan,
taken on their world flight,
that they were the persons
she and her brother-in-law
had seen on Saipan.
Parade said Mrs. kiyama's
account is contained in a book
to be published shortly by
f)uell, Sloan and Pearce en
itled "Daughter of the Sky,"
written by Paul L. Briand
Jr., a professor at the Air
Force Academy.
Medford, Mass. - (UPD - The
family of Amelia Earhart
said they could not agree
with a report that the long
missing aviatrix was execu
ted by a Japanese firing
squad in 1937.
A spokesman said that if
the story were true, "the
fact would have come out
long ago. We are satisfied
that the Navy and other
searchers made every possible
effort to find the plane."
The family commented on
a copyrighted article in Pa
rade magazine which said
Miss Earhart, who disap
peared on a Pacific flight 23
years ago, was slain with her
co-pilot, Fred Noonan, after
crash landing off the then
Japanese-held island of Sai
pan in the South Pacific.
"We feel," the spokesman
said, "the plane missed How
land island and crashed at
sea." He said Howland, not
Saipan, was Miss Earhart's
destination.
