tion these days, man.
Translated into conformist
talk, daddy -that means the
police and the tourists have
infiltrated the hallowed
blocks of San Francisco's up
per Grant ave. where the
beards, bongoes and babe
filled leotards once held ex
clusive rights.
The Beatniks are still cool
ing it, though. Only now it's
hard to sip a beer or a cup of
espresso and stare bitterly
into space in peace. If the
fuzz aren't trying to book
somebody on a vagrancy
charge, the squares from No
wheresville, U.S.A. are shuf
fling up in their people
clothes trying to take pic
tures. And to compound the woes
of the anti-materialistic set,
the owners of the art shops
Sen. Kennedy
Is Favorite of
Oregon Students
Middletown, Conn. - Sen.
John F. Kennedy is the favor
ite Democratic candidate of
Oregon's grade and high
school students, according to
a presidential preference poll
conducted by Wesleyan uni
versity. Kennedy ran far ahead of
four other Democratic hope
fuls, but Vice President Rich
ard M. Nixon, the only Re
publican on the ballot, polled
the highest vote. The total
Democratic vote, however,
was more than 400 higher
than Nixon's 3,128.
Stevenson Second
Kennedy had 2,265, follow
ed by Adlai Stevenson with
479, Sen. Hubert Humphrey
with 348, Sen. Lyndon John
son with 242, and Sen. Stuart
Symington with 202.
Sen. Wayne Morse led the
write-ins with 79 and New
York's Gov. Nelson Rockefel
ler was second with 46.
The vote was conducted
through three of the national
current affairs periodicals
published by Wesleyan - Cur
rent Events, Every Week and
Our Times.
In the national vote, con
ducted in more than 32,000
classrooms in SO states, Nixon,
running as the only Republi
can on the ballot, received the
largest total of any individual
with 441,902 votes. Kennedy,
however, led the five Demo
crats on the ballot by a wide
margin, and the total vote
cast for Democrats exceeded
the total cast for Republicans
including, in both cases,
write-ins. Nearly one million
students in grades 6 through
12 voted.

Final counts for individuals
on the ballot showed these
totals:
Nixon 441,902
Kennedy 324,065
Stevenson 56,626
Johnson 52,812
Humphrey 46,093
Symington 31,137
Write-ins 12,857
Total 965,492
The Democrats received
515,466 votes, including write
ins, or 53.4 per cent of the
total vote cast, and the Re
publicans received 447,805
votes, including write-ins, or
46.4 per cent of the total. The
remaining .2 per cent were
scattered write-ins for persons
not readily identifiable by
party.
Kennedy led all other Dem
ocrats candidates in 48 of the
50 states and the District of
Columbia, losing only in Tex
as and Missouri to native sons
Johnson and Symington. Nix
on received the highest In
dividual vote in every state
but Connecticut, Massachu
setts, Missouri, Rhode Island,
Texas, Wisconson and the Dis
trict of Columbia. Kennedy
carried all of these except
Missouri and Texas. The
Democrats carried 29 states
and the Republicans, 21.

the wreckage of a downed
B58 supersonic bomber and
two crewmen.
Only concrete result ot
Sunday's dawn to dusk opera
tion was the discovery of a
large piece of the craft's tall
section on the east shore of
the lake, northwest of Prom
ontory Point, late in the after
noon. An Air Force spokesman
said it appeared the wreckage
had been washed ashore,
which supports a survivor's
statement he thought he saw
the bomber crash Into the
lake Friday afternoon.

Night," when anyone could
climb up to the balcony and
protest loudly about anything
(the best protestor got a fifth
of champagne) are just echoes
in the minds of a few.
Big Daddy Barred
Eric "Big Daddy" N o r d,
once the father-confessor of
North Beach, has been 86'd
(barred) from the area. The
fuzz also closed his warehouse
Party Pad where for a buck
one could bring in a jug of
red wine and mambo to an
impromptu bongo band from
midnight to 4 a.m.
The Bread and Wine Mis
sion has just been closed for
six months. The mission, an
opposite of the "beans for
hymns" arrangement, may
not reopen after its founder
gets back from a much-needed
vacation.
Pierre Delattrc, Congrega-
tlonallst minister, who In the
last year and a half has help
ed to start many an aspiring
artist and writer working in
his field, said quite a few of
the talented Beats are moving
away from North Beach or
no longer sitting in on Beat
affairs.
The mission kept religion
well in the background. It of
fered a place where one could
read his poetry aloud, exhibit
paintings, use the printing
press, take advantage of the
well - stocked library with
everything from St. Thomas
Aquinas to Sartre, or Just sit
around and sip coffee.
Delattre, in his working
clothes of sweatshirt and kha
kis, was ollen mistaken for
one of his followers. He ad
mitted there weren't many ar
tistically-ambitious bohemians
left who sought the facilities
of the mission, adding that
phonies-' the spiritually dead
and the culturally stagnant''
were growing beards and
slipping on sandals and out
beating the Beats.
Paddy Goes Square
And to top it off, Paddy
(Padric Seamus) O'Sullivan,
poet and roving landmark in
North Beach, has shaved off
his wild mustache and goatee.
doffed his 17th Century
plumed hat and cape and
started to wear square clothes
But don't let the above bug
you, Clyde. The Co-Existence
Bagel Shop and the Coffee
Gallery-the kitchen and liv
ing room of the Beatniks-are
still swinging. Painting and
photography exhibits, poetry
and essay readings and the
weird riffs of modern jazz are
still regular nightly attrac
tions. If you've got enough bread
to buy a round of beer, and
the ability to not alienate the
inhabitants, you can still find
somebody who will discuss
Zen Buddhism, existentialism,
outer space or the aesthetic
appreciation of sex.
That is, if you can fight
your way through the fuzz
and the squares.
Oh yes-and then, too, hey
you can still run across chicks
In black skirts, black leotards,
black turtleneck sweaters and
long black hair who will slink
up to you, give you a sloe
eyed onceover and say:
"Hey man-you got 25 cents?
