The Family Council
Editor' Notet The Family Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist,
three clerrymen, a newspaper editor a women's editor and two writers.
Each article is a summary of an actual case history. The Council reports
on problems that hava been dealt wl tt by responsible agencies and
counselors.
Tom D. - Dad won't help
me with a loan.
Mr. E. D. - I want to see
him get his comeuppance.
Tom D. - I am 22 and sin
gle and my only problem!
are job problems. I have no
trouble getting them, but I do
have trouble holding them.
The trouble is I'm the Inde
pendent type. I guess my
motto Is 'Don't fence me. In."
I won't be pushed around. I
can't stand having some Jerk
who doesn't know anything
about anything tell me what
to do. I learn quickly and I
don't want anyone standing
over me,
As a result, I've had about
a hundred jobs, There's no
future In that. The only thing
for me is to go into business
for myself. I want to open a
diner, but I need help from
my dad. I want him to Ret a
loan for me as I haven't been
able to swing it. Dad refuses.
Mr. E. D. - I've always said
the wont thing that ever hap
pened to Tom was to be classi
fied 4-F. He has very slight
disability, but the service
wouldn't have him. I'd like to
see him have to take orders
from a tough top sergeant.
Well, that's water down the
drain, but I still think Tom
has to learn that everyone
has to knuckle under to some
thing or someone. I can't Just
ride roughshod through life.
Maybe I'm a mean, selfish
father, but I'd like to Bee Tom
get his comeuppance.
His mother Is on his side
and she has been threatening
to use some of her own money
to help Tom. I've been talk
ing myself hoarse to prevent
her, but she has always spoil
ed him and I suspect she al
ways will.
a
The Counclli Mr. E, D. ap
pears to be on the right track
and we don't think his desire
to see his son get his "come
uppance" is a mean or malic
ious one. .
Tom is an Irritating char
acter, but we think his father
is essentially Interested in his
welfare and wants to teach
him to deal with life in
reasonable terms.
Tom prides himself on his
strength of will and character,
but Individuals like him are
really very wean, iney are i
Is the strongest motivating
factor. Tom fears being over
whelmed by any authority.
A strong person accepts the
(act that we must all take
orders at some time. The
trong person doesn't feel
threatened by authority but
accepts it in the natural course
pt things and tries to learn
from those in power. In this
way, ho learns to take author
ity himself when the time
comes. .
Our guess Is that if Tom got
his own way and opened that !
diner he would make a mess
of it. Ho thinks he would en
Joy bossing others, but he
would find himself complete
ly unable to do it. At least,
half the joy of disciplining
"others Involves disciplining
one's self, one's own emotions
- and this Tom hasn't learned
ment of one or both parents.
The individual .who hasn't
gotten past both of these
phases is simply not an emo
tional adult.
Tom should recognize that
he is fortunate in having a
father . who understands his
fundamental problem and is
trying to get him to deal with
it. He should set himself the
task of conquering his child
ishness before taking on more
responsibility than ha can
handle.
