Famed Old Berlin Hotel Now
'Lower Middle Class' Eatery
Br LEROY KELLER
East Berlin - d'PD - It once
more is possible to have lunch
In Berlin's famed old Adlon
Hotel, but it takes a vivid
imagination to recall any of
the glories of the setting of
Vicki Baum'f "Grand Hotel."
The main part of the hotel
till is in ruins, but the rear
was undamaged. The "restau
rant" operates in what once
was the servants' quarters.
The dining room is 40 feet
long and 16 feet wide. It is
divided into two rooms.
The "luxury" area is to the
' rear and is distinguished by
two thin rugs placed over the
gray marble floor.
In all, there were 13 tables,
four in the bare-floored front
room, and nine in the rear.
The tables are small and
round, made of boards an
inch-and-a-half thick, support
ed by a painted metal base.
The white tablecloths were
drab and bore evidence of re
peated use. Cheap paper nap
kins and beat-up silver com
pleted the setting.
Traditional Uniform
The waiters wore the tradi
tional black uniform, about
the only bow to gracious liv
ing. They are forbidden of
ficially to accept a tip, so serv
ice is slow and uninspired.
Only four or five of the tables
were occupied at any one
time.
I went over with Joe Flem
ing, UPI Berlin manager, and
Dieter Scmitt, UPI German
business manager. We had a
drink of vodka washed down
by East German beer, Italian
salad, veal steak, fried pota
toes and hard rolls.
The bill, including a pack
age of East German cigarettes
which cost six marks, came
to slightly more than 41 West
German marks, or a little
over $10.
Despite the relative ex
pensiveness of the Adlon, it
is a "lower middle class" eat
ing place. Tops in East Berlin
is the Budapest. We went
there for coffee.
The Budapest was four or
five times as large as the
lunchroom at the Adlon and
it was crowded. Only one ta
ble was available.
It is on Stalinallee, housed
in one of the ponderous Russian-style
new buildings
which have gone up along
what once was Frankfurter
allee. Had To Prove Pay
At this restaurant we, as
westerners, had to prove we
could pay in West German
marks before being served.
Three coffees and two East
German cognacs cost five
marks seventy, about $1.40.
The Adlon is just east of
the Bradenburg Gate, one of
the six legal passageways into
East Berlin. Next to it on
Wilhelmstrasse stands the
Hindenberg Castle, a monu
ment in ruins.
South of that stood Hitler's
Reichschancellry. It was only
partly destroyed during the
war, but was torn down by
the Russians and today is a
vacant lot. A large pile of dirt
marks the spot where Hitler
committed suicide in a bunker
beneath the chancellery.
Across the street was the
Propaganda Ministry from
which Joseph Goebbels direct
ed his hysterical campaigns.
It houses the East German
Comunist Propaganda Bureau

slogan, splashed on Oregon

magazines and in newspapers,
was adopted by the Highway
Commission last fall.
It replaced "You'll Remem

many years.
Tourism is still the state's
third biggest industry, behind
Tne
today. Goering's huge Air
Ministry has been restored
and is the seat of the East
German government.
The old B e r 1 i n Opera
House, pride of Germany, also
has been restored. It stands in
the same place on Unter den
Linden. It and the huge Soviet
Embassy are the only struc
tures rebuilt on this once
beautiful thoroughfare.
Farther down around the
Mark Engels Platz on Koenig
strasse, ren a m e d Rathaus
strasse,, the Communists have
rebuilt the City Hall. It is
again of red brick and still is
known as the Red City Hall -aptly
named now on two
counts.

day. It made a big share of
Oregonlans who never
thought about it before aware
of being hosts.
The division the segment
of the Oregon Highway Com
mission whose responsibility
it is to keep the tourists flow
ing here is exploiting that
this year.
Division Director Carl Jor
dan is on I swing of eastern
Oregon and the Columbia
Gorge this week hitting the
Chamber of Commerce and
other groups with the idea.
He covered southern Ore
gon, the Coast and the Willa
mette valley last week.
The chambers will filter
the host suggestion down to
the grass roots. What it
amounts to is the hope of an
even friendlier approach by
the average citizen to the
tourists. The communities
will have the ball and Jordan
says they ire enthused about
it.
The number of tourists in
Oregon increased by three per
cent in 1959 but the money
spent was up 20 per cent. The
idea this year is to get tour
ists to stay in the state at least
one more day. If this is done,
Oregon will scoop up an extra
40 million dollars.
Beit Luxes
The state's best lures, sta
tistics show, are water lakes,
streams, waterfalls and the
ocean and mountains.
"We can't compete with
San Francisco on its metro
politan night life, or with
Kansas on its wheat fields,"
concedes Dennis Clarke, as
sistant director of the division.
"But good clean air? We're
loaded. A great number of our
tourists come here from Los
Angeles county. They're gasp
ing for breath down there
and elsewhere."
Figures back him up and
show that 40 per cent of those
who came to Oregon last year
were Californians. Twenty-
six per cent came from Wash
ington state, six per cent from
Canada, and five per cent
from Idaho. Then it goes
Texas, Utah, Kansas, Arizona,
Ohio and Illinois.
Clarke reports that Oregon's
tourist slogan. "Relax in a
state of excitement," is being
accepted despite some criti
cism.
"Everybody pokes fun el
1959 income, when six million
out-of-staters visited, was $176
million.
Although the 1959 drawing
card was the centennial, Cla
rue says they expect nearly
that many visitors again this
season.
Livestock Officers
Receive Uniforms
Livestock officers for the
state department of agricul
ture have been placed in uni
form for "formal" occasions.
Eldon Beckner, who serves
this district as livestock offi
cer, is among those who will
appear in a new tan whipcord
uniform for road checks and
patrol duties, "where it is im
portant that the public rec
ognize them," the department
reported.
The uniform includes an Ei
senhower jacket with a blue
and gold patch showing the
word "investigator" under the
livestock brand inspector half
circle insigna.
The uniforms were issued
last week at the first of a
series of refresher and train-
ingcourses given by the department.
