Home Inspection Is
Planned by City
Fire Department
During 1959, some 32 per
sons in Oregon perished in
home fires, including 14 chil
dren under five years old. An
average of 33 Oregon homes
a day sustained some loss due
to fire.
In an effort to reduce this
toll, the Medford fire depart
ment is Joining with depart
ments throughout the state in
a Home Tire Prevention campaign.
During the campaign, start
ing Monday, April 18, uni
formed firemen with proper
identification will call at Med
ford residences to offer their
services in pointing out fire
hazards, often not recognized
as such by the residents.

Lt. Richard W. Kesson, 31, o
Portland, Ore.
Kesson was killed when his
F-100 jet fighter, based at
Wcthersfield, Essex, crashed
In a storm near North Dal-
mally, Scotland.
Kesson is survived by his
wife. Diana Mae, and two
children, Katherine, 3, and
James, 16 months. His moth
er is Mrs. Ruth K. Radzi
kouskl of Los Angeles.
The Kesson family lived In
Braintree, near the airfield
where Kesson was based with
the 55th tactical fighter
squadron of the 20th tactical
fighter wing.
Old Anchor Cause
Of Controversy
Portland -IUPH- An ancient
anchor dredged from the
muddy bottom of the Colum
bia river has become the cen
ter of a controversy over
property rights.
The anchor, believed to be
100 years old or more, was
pulled up recently by the
Army Engineers' Tug Poll
mus while grappling for a
smaller anchor lost by a
dredge.
It was found about 250
yards from the site of Fort
Vancouver and about 400
yards upstream from the In
terstate highway bridge.
Frank lljort, superintend
ent of the Fort Vancouver Na
tional Monument, said the 12
foot wrought iron anchor had
been found near his baliwick
and said he wanted it back.
It is presently In custody of
the Army Engineers here.
Tht Sea Explorers indicated
they may put in a claim for it,
and the Army Engineers said
they want to keep it.
The decision will real with
Col. Walter Winegar. district
engineer, who was out of town
on business.

one-half of them each year.
Inspected This Year
All homes having addresses
on streets extending east and
west will be inspected this
year. Last year, those homes
having addresses on streets
extending north and south '
were inspected.
Nelson said that the hazards
found in the homes are usual
ly thought of as being minor.
But these minor hazards are
the kind that are responsible
for .the large majority of
house fires, he added.
In 1959, 1,816 homes were
inspected and a total of 1,336
recommendatioQji were made
for the removal of fire haz
ards. Nelson pointed out that
the worth of this campaign is
exhibited by the fact that last
year there was a noticeable
drop In the number of dwell
ing house fires following
these inspections.
"The reason for these ln-

that much less loss of prop
erty and less danger to human
life."
Increases Noted
In Oregon alone last vear
there was a 7.87 per cent In
crease in home fires over
1958. This set an all-time hiBh
for the state of 12,122 home
fire claims, not even counting
those homes damaged in the
Roseburg disaster.
Nelson pointed out that the
home fire prevention cam
paign is based on the princi
ple that the inspection is a
fire department service to the
citizens and that the house
holder can refuse entrance to
the inspector without incur
ring any penalty or official
action.

Chicken Pox Leads
Number of Diseases
Chicken pox and measles
accounted for the greatest
number of communicable dis
eases reported in Jacksnn
county last week, according to
Dr. C. I. Drummond, public
health physienn.
A total of 40 chicken pox
cases were reported, 28 of
them in Medford. Other
cases were reported at Phoe
nix 3, Central Point 4, Rogue
River 2, and Gold Hill, Shady
Cove, and Ashland, 1 each.
Thirty cases of measles
were reported, 13 In Ashland.
6 in Ruch, 5 in Medford and
3 in Phoenix and Evans Val
ley. Other communicable dis
eases reported Included Ger
man measles, Medford 1; In
fluenza, Medford 10, Ashland
2, Shady Cove 1; whopping
cough, Medford 2: meningo
cocci meningitis, Ashland and
Medford 1; mumps, Medford
4, Rogue River 3; pneumonia,
Ashland 2; scarlet fever, Med
ford 1; and strep throat, Med
ford 1.
