Gold-Plated Bricks
Just Around Corner

Service) Gold-plated metals,
plastics, and glazed bricks and
tiles may soon become a com
mon sight in all walks of life.
Gold-plated lead bricks have,
of course, been available
through the "confidence In
dustry" for many years.
Hanovia Liquid Gold here
has developed four new
gold - bearing organic com
pounds which decompose at
lower temperatures than those
previously available. These
are gold tertiary butyl, ter
tiary dodecyl, tertiary octyl,
and tertiary bexadecyl met
captides, and are already in
dustrially available in various
formulations.
The solution is applied to
the prepared surface and the
object is then heated in an
oven, or under infrared lamps,
to decompose the organic mat
ter. The required tempera
tures range from about 450
degrees Fahrenheit in the
case of plastics, to as high
as 1,500 degrees from some
enamels on stainless steel.
There remains on cooling a
thin film of gold, perhaps only
a millionth of an Inch In
thickness. The cost of the pro
cess giving a film of this
thickness Is about 10 cents a
square foot.
Not only will this process
be used for decorative pur
poses, but, due to the excel
lent heat-reflecting proper
ties of gold, it will also be
used in protecting some metal
components of missiles and
high Bpeed jet planes.

26 Million Polio
Doses Available;
Warning Issued

ice) There are more than 26
million doses of polio vaccine
now on hand for the more
than 90 million Americans
who remain unvaccinated, Dr.
Leroy E. Burney, surgeon
general of the U.S. Public
Health Service, has reported.
"Every year, for the past
four years, there has been a
surplus of vaccine in the
spring and winter followed
by a shortage in the summer
when the occurence of polio
cases reminds people they
should get vaccinated," Dr.
Burney said.
Mutt Understand Facts
He suggested that the prob
lem can be solved only when
the public understands the fol
lowing facts:
1. The vaccine is most ef
fective if used before polio
becomes pervalent; the soon
er you get vaccinated the
greater will be your protec
tion against polio this season.
2. The vaccine manufactur
ing process takes about four
months; if demand for vac
cine is low now, supplies are
likely to be low in the sum
mer, since the present supply
may be outdated by then.
3. It is the third shot, due
seven or more months after
the first two that gives the
greatest protection. A fourth
shot a year after the third
adds even greater protection.

Most polio epidemics now
start in neighborhoods where
there are concentrations of
unvaccinated people. Infants
and children under five years
of age are prime victims in
such areas. They have ac
counted for almost half of the
paralytic cases that have oc-

terials used to accelerate a
fire may sometimes be iden
tified after separation by dis
tillation, extraction or other
methods.
However, these "accelera
tors" are often so altered by
the loss of their more volatile
constituents, the addition of
outside impurities, or chemi
cal change in the heat of the
fire that these methods are
no longer effective,

Tiredness May Mean Physical Illness

Service) - If a patient's main
complaint is tiredness, he is
probably physically ill, rather
than Just worn out.
Dr. Geoffrey Ffrench of
Oakville, Ontario, Canada,
studied 1,200 patients, 109 of
whom listed tiredness as the
first or second most Import
ant reason for reporting to the
doctor. Physical examinations
revealed that 25 per cent of
the tired patients were anx
ious or tense, but had no ac
tual physical illness.
The other 75 per cent had
diseases and dysfunctions

Aluminum Fences

Frank R. Nichols, if aluminum
chain-link fences were install
ed along the U.S. superhigh
way system now being built.
Nichols, who is president of
the Nichols Wire and Alumi
num Co. here pointed out that
while the federal government
is paying 90 per cent of all
construction costs, the states
will have to pay 100 per cent
of the maintenance bills.
Aluminum fences would re
duce these bills, Nichols said,
because they would not rust
and would need no painting.
