Swim Classes
For Men To Be
Conducted at Y
The YMCA will feature a
men's swimming proRram be
ginning Monday, April 18.
Classes are to be held over
a six week period in a series
of 12 sessions on Mondays and
Fridays from 5:15 to 6 p.m.
All phases of swimming tech
niques from beginners to ad
vanced will be taught in ac
cordance with individual
needs.
Instruction is to be handled
by Jerry Scannell.who has
naa in YMCA instruction ex
perience in the midwest.
It is the purpose and the
aim of Medford's YMCA to
stimulate adult interest in In
structional programs of this
type. Because of the popular
ity of family participation in
water sports, the necessity for
a more thorough aquatic pro
gram has become imperitive,
David Curzon, Y physical di
rector brought out. He point
ed out the value of swimming
as "water insurance" as well
as being a means of relaxation
and health.
Responsibility '
Curzon mentioned the re
sponsibility each man owes
his family and friends when
he takes them boating, skiing
or fishina. He declarer! that In.
struction in swimming is
someining no conscientious
father should ig..ore. The
physical director pointed to
needless water accidents oc
curring from lack of fore
thought and lack of know
ledge. He maintained that the
old adage, "sink' or swim" is
unwise and uhneceaiwrv Th.
answer is "swim," he said.
The YMCA Drnvirlos sulm
classes for persons three
through 60 years of age. With
summer .approaching, Curzon
urged parents and children to
attend their swim-vl
ularly. All, he said.jshould be
aDie to swim well enough to
save themselves in emergen
