From Camp White
By BID HOLLINGS WORTH Cross was second with 1,025
There is a lesson to be
learned in community spirit
worn the modest little town o(
Eagle Point. It is really no
more than a village tucked
away In the (olds of the hills
back of the Camp White VA
uomicmary
For some years now, sparks
of good will have been radi
ating from this small com
munity that cannot escape no
nce, -mere is, to begin with
the example of the Rogue
Valley State Bank, which af
ter building sufficient pres
tige, moved into Medford.
Then came the Dairy Maids,
with Eagle Point as the base
of operations and the source
of much of their talent in
Softball. The Rogue Valley
Dairy Maids are known now
throughout all of the north
west.
Horsemanship is preserved
here as a tradition, matching
Kentucky, Maryland or any
part of the "old west." The
interest is preserved by a sus
taining interest among the
younger generation. The 4-H
club Pegasus group performs
regularly in riding feats.
The new stadium at the
domiciliary has furnished an
arena for demonstration of
this latent skill in sports and
Camp White veterans have
shown their appreciation in
pecuniary as well as verbal
support. Many men from the
home have adopted the town
and journey there frequently
by foot or by bus as patrons.
The town is quiut and its
citizens are unassuming.
There are two fine schools,
for grade and high school
pupils, both modern and at
tractive. A fine band is an
other attribute of this kind
of promotion. There are not
many towns this size that do
more for their country than
Eagle Point.
One can say with Portia in
the Merchant of Venice:
"How far that little candle
throws its beams.'
Innumerable little things
are done for the domiciliary
by Eagle Point residents.
The Grange ladies come
over to do miscellaneous sew
ing for members. Cub Scouts
are on hand for special cere
monies including Memorial
Day exercises. There ts a
bowling team of Eagle Point
school teachers, and In stage
appearances o I volunteer
groups, Eagle Point is always
well represented.
hours. Non-affiliated groups
numbering 164 gave 2,643
hours of service.
The fields of activity at
the domiciliary included such
divisions as nursing, physical
medicine and rehabilitation,
chaplaincy, arts and crafts,
library and recreation, as well
as special services.
Fifteen "Future Nursei of
America" from Medford High
school were guests of the nurs
ing service Thursday after
noon. They were greeted by
Miss Grace Stuhr, chief nurse,
and escorted through the
domiciliary by Mrs. Christine
Bates, of the nursing staff.
Enid Holmes, chief librar
ian, says at least 400 visitors
attended the "library week"
parly at the new domiciliary
library April 3. Among them
were librarians and local of
ficials from nearby towns.
Refreshments were provided
through the Civil Service
bowling team and the VA em
ployees association.
